Uses for broken rod?

Life of the Party
I broke my old but well loved Echo rod, and per their (what I consider to be) reasonable policy, for $50 they sent me a new rod.

Now, I have a rod that is broken 5 inches from the tip but the rest of the sections are fine. Any of you come up with uses for broken rods?

Good question.

Tomato stakes...
I used to keep the old 2 piece broken rods in case someone needed a butt section, after 30 years I tossed them.

Badminton racket... 🏸

Is your Echo out of prodcution? Echo offers replacement tips for many of their rods (I have spare tips for three of my four Echo rods.

Yes, out of production; it was their first production rod. I’ve had a lot of rods since then, but that one had a special place in my heart. Weird to have a fly rod in my heart, I know, but that one for some reason was always my gamer.

Welp…this one might be a doozy, but I’ll give you the details anyway. One of the first fly shops I spent a decent amount of time in was over in Beaverton. Kinda in the Washington Square area. Anyway, it’s closed now, but an old timer there gave me this suggestion. Which was very fitting for the place the more I learned.

He recommended pairing it up with any other tip from the same weight rod. Essentially, find any other random rod tip you can (in this case it was a 4wt) that fits and get back out there fishing.

I’ll tell you, this man was dead on correct. It worked for years. If I wasn’t able to see the green to brown rod sections transition so clearly, I’d have probably never known. Who knows…maybe it was just BS and I fell for it, but I swear it worked!

I have fly and gear rods that are married like Snakes suggests. In a couple of instances the franken versions are better than the originals.
Likely be different colors with guides needing rewrapping but no big deal.

I have one 10' 8-15# gear rod that has a lower modulus butt section with higher modulus 9wt tip that is awesome.

I've repaired a few broken rods, though not that close to the tip. I find another rod piece that fits inside and one that fits over, kinda like splinting inside and out. Obviously changes the action of the rod. Would be a little tough to do that close to the tip though. Would really change the overall action.

new tiptop and call it good.

I have this older Dan Craft 7wt that I broke the top couple of inches off, so now I have an 8'10" 7/8wt. Fantastic rod before, fantastic rod now.

or, new tomato stake

or, do the warranty thing

or, do nothing

lots of options...

I have a ten wt that I broke about six inches from the tip, but it just didn’t cast right shortened. So I used a piece of old rod as an interior splint, but it broke again. So I got a drill bit to use as an interior splint, and used minnow body braid (instead of thread) as the exterior wrap. This has held up.

Or use @Snakes approach.

They’re also good for poking things that are 8.5 feet away, which comes in handy more often than you’d think.

A friend broke the tip off his rod an inch or so above the second guide. He’s fished it that way for 20 years. Now, he doesn’t fish often, or cast very well, but he’s saved enough money to retire young.

Here is a link to Gink and Gasoline with a good idea for a broken rod.

If it were me I'd get a new tip top guide and call it a half weight heavier and fish it for bass or something and really beat the crap out of it.
