It's an attempt to limit the death of civilians, and the use of weapons and tactics the lead to or are designed and used in direct attacks on civilians, as opposed to military. It's long been held that direct attacks on non combatant civilians populations is not an acceptable way to conduct a military campaign.
Sure, some people engage in that conduct, they're typically not folks whose values align with the rest of the world.

In 1474, the first trial for a war crime was that of Peter von Hagenbach, realised by an ad hoc tribunal of the Holy Roman Empire, for his command responsibility for the actions of his soldiers, because "he, as a knight, was deemed to have a duty to prevent" criminal behaviour by a military force. Despite having argued that he had obeyed superior orders, von Hagenbach was convicted, condemned to death, and beheaded.[

Thank you for explaining. I think I'm going to be done with my comments mostly because my ignorance and distaste for war are clouding my judgement.

I too despise war, it's a lousy way to settle geopolitical disputes.

This thread about Russian paratroopers as ‘riot police’ and intimidation reveals Putin’s original expectation that he would roll right in and not encounter military resistance from Ukraine.

Hence the subsequent shift to brute military force and terrorizing civilians.

I know It would do me a great service to read up on this (and I will). But my answer is still

It's war. You would think it would be "against the rules" to try and seize someone else's country but 🤷‍♂️
I get it. I just dont have an easy answer for you, and I'm sure nobody else does either.

Thermobaric and cluster bombs are both prohibited against civillian targets. Nor are signatories of the agreement allowed to target hospitals, schools, places of worship etc. unless those places are being used by opposing forces as positions of attack or defense. I don't know if Russia is a signatory or not.

We and the rest of the world should send our navy's to the black sea just to clog the place up so that Russian ships cannot maneuver.
Nothing hostile just be in the way so they can't do anything.

Apparently Ukraine Special forces has announced that they will no longer spare Russian troops or take prisoners . this is a response to the intentional shelling of civilians.

Russia is carrying out cyber attacks against the US using legitimate websites and users in other parts of the world.
They are farming contacts to attack from email contacts at computers and websites they've penetrated.
They increase their footprint when someone clicks on a link or opens a file becomes a new emitter
Be Cautious
Ensure your personal and website (this) AV is up to date.
Do not open files sent from trusted email addresses without checking the trace route.

Also advisable to keep your pantry stocked and cars gassed up.

Just Russian artillerymen :

Source: Leadership of the Special Operations Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces

Quote: "The SOF Brotherhood sends greetings to Russian artillerymen! You made it: after you shelled our peaceful cities, our relatives, and children in the most brutal way - you worms have become our primary target (...).

From now on, there will be no more captive Russian artillerymen. No mercy, no "please don't kill me, I surrender" will fly. You shall all be slaughtered like pigs no matter the position: commander, driver, the one aiming the gun. "

I just can't imagine how heartless a person has to be doing this. And if Putin was somehow eliminated, would some equally horrible vermin would take his place.

And Putin will spin this and say "See? See how cruel the Ukrainians are? See how justified I am in attacking them and killing their children?"

The escalation with just continue and continue, unfortunately.

That is the conundrum, or one of many. Can being principled, better human beings be a successful strategy? Or, are the Russian people so propagandized that the reality of the situation is irrelevant?

It's ok . There's a lot of us here who are fed up with this too. What's happening here is an atrocity on world center stage. Dont be afraid to comment, most of all, don't be afraid to ask questions and learn.

@Rob
The Turks have started restricting access via Bosphorus blockade as of Monday or Tuesday. Apparently even a tyrant like Erdogan has limits

After reading what I can find on the average Russians reactions, and the continuing protests there despite the heavy handed government responses, I suspect there's about a 70/30 split against Putin.

it basically comes down to me thinking that all war is a war crime, but actually labeling things as such feels like splitting hairs as a means to justify war in some cases. but what do i know, i went to art school.

It appears quite a few are getting enough news outside of state propaganda to spark the protests, but nothing will change as long as Putin is in charge. Did anyone else watch the ABC piece on him intimidating and bullying his own spy chief in front of his inner circle? That guy is also a stone cold killer, and Putin treated him like a 6 year old and had the man stammering at the microphone. Putin actually said "Are you suggesting we negotiate? Are you suggesting we recognize the sovereignty of the Republics?" Think about that. He basically said "are you saying we should recognize they are their own country with their own plans and future, and the we have no right to murder them and subjugate them under our communist yoke AGAIN?" The spy chief went on state TV later to publicly support the attack on Ukraine.

Nothing will change unless Putin is removed. And more Ukrainians are dying.

You have to really understand the hatred Putin has for Ukraine and its people to really "get" this. He understands how proud they are and he now understands how resolved they are to never go back under his rule. He thought it would be a cakewalk. He sees it isn't, so he's going to old school Siege Warfare to pummel them, kill as many Ukrainians as possible, break their will and destroy them forever.

There are millions of ethnic Ukrainians living throughout Russia, but most prominently in Siberia. This started involuntarily, when Russia would burn Ukrainian villages and put everyone on trains and dump them off in the middle of Siberia with basic tools. They'd be told "we stole your land and burned your home and village, but we spared you, build a new village here."

The thing is, they survived. And later on many Ukrainians volunteered to move to Siberia and joined up with the others. There are entire towns all over Siberia that are predominately Ukrainian now. Knowing Putin, when this is all over, if Russia does take Ukraine, he'll send his goon squads up there and murder every Ukrainian they find.
