I was talking to my nephew yesterday who has two little kids and he was saying he was worried about Kyiv and World War III if China gets involved and how much he didn’t want his kids to grow up during wartime. And I said think about those kids in Ukraine growing up IN a war.

I had a longer post about this but decided to delete it and just leave this:

I don’t know a lot about the history of Ukraine and Russia so i appreciate this thread. Eight pages of a very civil discussion, that is also informative to me. If only PNW members here were reflective of all America. Thank you.

It was my first big lesson in nationalism and oppressive politics first hand. I was there twice in 1991. As an American working there most of the folks i met thought i was rich. The difference from then and now societally is huge. When i was there they lived with monthly rationing few owned cars too expensive. Salaries compressed unlike here meaning the difference from a
working stiff and academic were not that different. We were watched apparently most of the time. I was in Vladivostok, Khabarovsk , Birobidgon and Irkutsk.(photo me on left with interpreter)

Well I guess this answers an earlier question posted here:

The Sun: Russian space chief threatens to allow ISS to FALL onto US or Europe.

C’mon now. The Sun as a news source is unreliable to say the least. They flat out make shit up.

The guy they quoted is known for his outlandish statements. Typical of the sun and other tabloids to find the person who will pop off in the most outrageous manner, and then publish it.

More like the National Enquirer, with the stories about batboy, or dogman...and of course alien abductions and shocking new discoveries proving lizard people rule the world.

We live in the post information age.
There are equal experts on every issue imaginable and they do not agree.
There are start up information sources that are as reliable and ancient long revered ones. There are long standing publications who aren't worth the paper they are printed on.
It is nearly impossible for a laymen ( like us) to be informed on any topic regardless of what we think about ourselves or our sources.
If one thinks themselves informed they can be assured of one thing. They are just manipulated by the sources they read.
The remedy? Take EVERYTHING you read with a grain of salt regardless of the source, be constantly on the vigil against conformation bias and trust your gut. No one can lie to you more thoroughly than your own brain. So don't overthink things.

Just like the middle east, this mess has been going on for a long time. We didn't cause it, and we should just let them figure it out.

Yeah, going with your gut as opposed to critical thinking and analysis is always the right path...

🤣

“And so, it is vitally important that we help Ukraine succeed in resisting Russian aggression, through punishing sanctions on Russia and through defensive military support for Ukraine. Thanks to the extensive diplomatic efforts of the Biden Administration, we have come together with our NATO and other Allies on a devastating series of sanctions on Russian banks, industry, technology support, and oligarchs. And it is my hope we will go even further. The Russian people must be made to feel the terrible folly of their leader’s deadly belligerence.

There will be some at home who seek to politicize this tragedy, like the former President who praised Putin as a genius, even while he was invading our democratic ally. But our focus must remain on Ukraine and its people, and the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding.

Over the days and weeks ahead, the images we will see from Ukraine will be devastating. Indeed they already are. Ukrainians deserve so much better and need our strong support.”

Adam Schiff

Please keep Ukraine in your thoughts and prayers. Talk soon.

... Or sometimes the opposite to the above cartoon is true - Ockham’s razor - other things equal, explanations that posit fewer entities, or fewer kinds of entities, are to be preferred to explanations that posit more, ie, you find yourself having to chase conspiracy after conspiracy to support your theory, it is likely wrong, (not to be political, but think of rigged election claims - China did it with Italian satellites after Germany kidnapped the CIA director ...). It's been said, critical thinking: Does this follow from that (logic), does it make sense, what other explanations are there ... just use your brain.

Don't forget Hugo Chavez...
;)
One of any autocrats/strongman key tools is convincing the population the truth is unknowable, that everyone is lying, and only I can fix this, so trust me and I will take care of things. Putin has been a longtime practitioner of this, as is well known.

It appears Putin has no desire to give up his KGB ideals. From what I've read, he wants Russia to become the USSR again. So all this is a very bad sign. WWII started by the invasion of one country by a larger power and did not stop there.

Sure, why not. Pandemic and now a war in Europe.

Also true, but sometimes neither work well in a predictive sense when behavior is emanating from the non-cognitive limbic portion of a dictator's brain.

I think Putin is more looking to recreate Imperial Russia, rather than the USSR. Perhaps a distinction without a difference if you live in Ukraine of course...
He's made several speeches to that effect, and has worked with the Russian Orthadox Church to use their historical influence to justify a reunification of areas having 'Traditional Russian values and language' as a rationale for his actions.
