Tuna 2026

We got back yesterday and figured we would put this together, fishing was insane. 1 albacore after another and 20+ on the fly!

Looks like great trip! I will say that bigger boats like that tend to make folks more sick than smaller faster boats like the day trippers out of Westport. Slow + diesel + rollers can be a bad combo for those who are prone to seasickness.

Niiiiiiice. That boat does look fun to fish from!
What’s the story on the broken reel? What was it and anything useful we can learn from that?
The actual handle broke off one of the Lamson Litespeed M reels mid reeling in a fish, ill be sending it back Monday to see what they say.. I dont think that should ever happen the screw literally snapped/clean break and Kelly hand to pull in the fly line by hand (he actually landed that one too)! Almost all these companies seem to be primarily DTC brands so hopefully they still take care of us.

yeah that makes sense, there was a light breeze and even with the decent swell no one got sick which is great! Id say if your prone to being sea sick the PNW isnt really the best place in general for you lol. Ive been out there tons of times on what I would call an incredible weather day and still seen people get sick on my old mans Parker.

After literally thousands of days and nights at sea these are the steps that have worked for me:

No alcohol for a few days before you sail.
Start taking your anti-puke a day before you sail.
Simple foods before/during the trip, but make sure you keep your stomach full and try to stay hydrated.
Stay upwind/away from any exhaust fumes (unless it's time to puke, in which case try to puke downwind)
Focus on the horizon/don't look down when outside.
Minimize inside time as much as possible. If you have to be inside/it's dark, try to find the most stable part of the boat. A V-berth in the bow is generally worse/pitchy than a midships bunk, and I'll sleep on deck or in the lounge if it's the better option.
The progression generally goes from fine to yawning to sleepy to kill me now, and gets worse faster than it gets better unless you find calmer water or get back to shore or you eventually get your sea legs which can take from hours to days to never.

Of course YMMV and everyone's different.

My last worst night at sea was documented here (minute 10+)

I'm extremely prone to motion sickness from spinning and swells and have been taking a cocktail of meds to stay upright on the Tuna trips that I've been on (patch + 1/2 tab of promethazine with a Zofran on hand for breakthrough nausea).

FWIW there's a new sea-sickness med on the market - trade name "Nereus" - (evidently the first in ~40 years) that acts via a different pathway and supposedly avoids some of the more unpleasant side effects of scopalamine and other meds that hit the same target. I know someone that occasionally works a ship's doctor for boats that cross the Drake Passage so will eventually get some first hand beta on how effective it is compared to the old standbys.

One 4th of July camping trip to Mystry Island back in the early 80's, we had small craft warning on the trip out. Heading south from Everett to turn the corner took 2+hr in 4-5' rollers. As usual I was puking my guts out, once a camp a family friend was teasing me for it.
On the trip home, P/S was as flat as a mirror, the kid that was teasing me was way sicker than I got in big rollers, I was a relentless a A Hole on the CB!
Dad eventually told me to be nice, nope fuck that kid! 😅😇🤣
