Tuna 2024

So are swimbaits just for ding dongs? Because I think casting shit at tuna or where tuna might be is pretty fun. And I’ve caught some doing that with swim baits and I didn’t hate it, I gotta admit.

If that's the case, I have more than one ding dong for a friend ;). A now retired work buddy, and fly fisher, was on a trip out of Garibaldi in 2015 (one I'll never forget being burned into my mind, and palm, as "Spooling Day").

Anyway, he was having so much fun casting those little rubber fish, he adamantly refused to pick up a fly rod. Great memory though seeing 60yo guy giggling like a 6yo kid.

We all did good that day, but he was the main reason it took us (amateurs) over 2hrs to cark 40ish hefty tuna.

And thanks for the reminder. It's been a while. I should probably touch base with ol' "Swimbait Joe" .

I used to cast swim baits any time the boat stopped, before I got into the iron game. When they were best known as "Fish Traps". I caught a lot of fish on them, but agree about them often loosing fish.
The reason I switched to jigs on stops was the ability to cover more water faster. Also being able to cover more depths. With different jigs, I also can vary the presentation. The swim baits work best when the school is aggressive and up top. It is hard to get them much below 50' and that takes a while to sink that far. My last trip I hooked many fish 120-150' deep. Can't do that with swim baits.

Man, there's a lot to unpack from that old video. Everything from how lean everyone used to be to how much more expensive the vessels and gear have gotten.

Saturday is looking highly likely for me right now. It's also looking like it may be pretty fly-focused. My freezer is already full, so why not play a bit more? That said, I'm sure I'll keep reaching for the iron. Just too fun.

Anyone toss out one of those multi-minnow patterns on a trip this year? IIRC I saw those posted on a thread a while ago and thought it looked like a cool idea and worth taking a flyer on if nothing else was working.

FWIW on my one trip the fun-to-tie-but-probably-won't-work semi-novelty fly I made with a giant Spawn head, a "dragon tail" body, and a bunch of hair/fiber/hackle in Seahawk's colors that I tied on when the fishing slowed down, and nothing else seemed to be getting hit got slammed right next to the boat a few seconds after I threw it over the side.

I had so little confidence in the fly that I was just letting it dangle/drag over the side while I dealt with a major tangle in my line. Having a tuna on the other end initially didn't do much to help, but after a few seconds it tore my fly line in half and the tangle was no longer an issue....

Right behind you on Thursday. Go find em for us please!
Squid flies and olive over white small bait ~4” were the go-to flies today. Wet going out, but sunny when we were out there. Roughly 50 miles due west.

15 fish boated, a couple of which were sizable, and we’d have had about 8 more if we hadn’t functionally been a group of two. @Nick Clayton got a couple, and deckhand Cal almost did.

Also, three lost fish due to RIO Leviathan breaking at the loop then twice more in the head, which is about 11’ shorter than it started the day.

12wt bamboo guy was crippled due to seasickness and hand issues and spent most of the ride not fishing. Got a fish on the bamboo, though, so pics and trip report to come. Nick tried the bamboo rod, too, so you can ask him about it.

Weather looks even better for tomorrow, if a little more wind.

FWIW a Phenergan-Scopalamine speedball kept me mostly functional out there. Might be of some use fir folks like me that have to white-knucle it on carnival rides with their kids but still want to ocean fush from time to time.

Only unpleasant and unforseen side effect was the combo made it damn near impossible to pee whilst out on the boat.

Dude just can't catch a break

That was a fun, but rather unfortunate day. Jake wasn't his usual self, and bamboo guy was pretty much unable to fish due to getting sick and some hand issues.

Still, we made the best of it and put some nice fish in the boat. Everyone who was able to get a cast out hooked at least a couple. I actually managed to hook 11 casting, but only landed 4 of them. Have been fishing some squid patterns lately that I tied on a wim a couple years ago and while they have been getting it done, I've been dropping a lot of fish on them. They're tied on an Ahrex hook but I can't remember which model. It's a lighter hook and the point tends to get messed up easily, and I think they aren't quite the right size for the Spawn head I tied with them and the hook gap isn't what I'd like it to be with the head. I think this accounts for the lost fish. I'll be tying a bunch more next time I can get to the vise, but likely on a shank or with a different hook. I've been having a ton of fun focusing on squid though. I've been fishing a brown/tan version and an orange version and both have done some serious work. Actually had an orange one meet it's maker today. After landing around the 20th albacore over the last few days, Cal noticed the Spawn head was broke in half and the fly was in shreds lol. It also hooked and lost probably 20 other fish, so 40ish times it was smashes by an albie before it bit the dust. Fitting end for a fly in my book!

Cal hooked, then lost his first fly cast albacore today. He's totally hooked and is already making plans to buy a fly outfit. He wouldn't stop talking about the grab all night

The fish have been biting trolled flies very well, and will eat a well presented cast fly quite well, but then they seem to shift into casual mode and while they'll stick with us they are much tougher to catch. It's been fun watching them though even when they stopped biting.

For the record, it was 17 landed today including the one Cal found hiding in the fish box. At least per his count, and I trust him. Jake is just being modest ;) Not bad all things considered.

That bamboo rod was something else. I was terrified, honored, and a bit guilty when he asked me to do him a favor and catch a fish on it since he wasn't able to fish. I was nervous even holding that thing. It's likely worth more than my first born child. It took me way too many casts to even remotely figure it out...been probably twenty years since I've touched bamboo, but I did start to get the feel for it and managed to hook a fish on it briefly but lost it before I could really see what it could do.

This was my 4th fly trip in a row, and it's been damn fun. Number 5 tomorrow.

This side of the fly doesn't look terrible

But the opposite side tells a different story lol

It wasn't a Leviathan line, but I had a Rio line cleanly break in August on a strong fish after a troll hit, about 15' up from the backing loop with no sign of any damage.. I think it was their 500 grain custom cut sinking line? Think that's some kind of outbound line. I don't have a reason it broke, though I did find a small stone stuck in my boot sole and it's possible I stepped on it and damaged the sheath while on the boat. It was 4-5 years old, but I go max twice a year, so used less than 10 times.

Lacking confidence in Rio lines, I bought the airflo depth finder big game this time around.

Edit: I also made sure to get a 50 lb core line. Core strength should be checked if it's not stated, I emailed SA to ask how strong the core was on their 12 wt Sonar Titan line, and shockingly, they said "25 lbs". I wasn't expecting that number for a 12 wt line, although i know how hard it is to actually get 25 lbs of force onto a line there isn't much margin there.

I was looking for the Airflo but couldn’t find one so I just picked up a brand new Leviathan yesterday and spooled it up today. I guess I’ll find out.

Interestingly enough, I threw 25lb leader on the leviathan yesterday after the first snap, and the 25lb mono was apparently stronger than the Rio line because it never broke.

I’ve heard good things about Orvis’ depth finder or whatever it is, but my local shop only carries the Rio and the Airflo, but had the wrong size of Airflo.
