The tales of Matney

Matney is quite the larger than life character. The one thing I learned about him after years of getting to know him: The more outrageous/unbelievable the story, the higher the chances are that it's 100% true.

@Evan B totally. I used to sit and listen to him and go, "nah, no fucking way. this guy's full of shit"

Turns out, it's all true. And he's a hell of a guy.

I'll try to give that podcast a listen, but I don't have an hour and a half to spare just now.

I too have a Matney story. On WFF there was a thread about "which WFF member would you most want to fish with?" A little later someone began a thread, "Which WFF member would you least likely want to fish with?" I posted Matney because he seemed like an arrogant prick. Not that he isn't a good angler; he is, and he knows it, and he's not the least bit humble about it. Later when he began his SE AK business I decided to give it a try for two reasons. First, I had fished AK but not SE, and I wanted to do that. Second, I knew Matney was an expert dirty-azzed nympher, so why not go with the best.

Personality wise, he and I are polar opposites. I suspect most people could say that because Rick is definitely cut from a different bolt of cloth. Nonetheless we got along just fine, most likely because of our mutual interest in fishing. So we hiked up our first creek on the first day of the trip to the pool he wanted me to fish. I looked in and saw four steelhead. I asked Rick how many of those we might hook. "All of them," he said. Not having done this before I handed him my rod and said, "Show me." He made one cast and hooked the first fish. Being new at it, it took me 11 or 12 casts to hook the other three. That's how the trip started. And he's a good cook and made excellent dinners each night back in town.

That’s a good story!
But I gotta say— Nobody sits around the ol’ podcast machine listening to the stories come out of it for 90 minutes. You listen while you’re driving to fishing (or work) or while you’re walking your dog or working out or washing dishes or picking apples or…

I also believe I saw Matney on a ‘Fishing with Ladin’ show/ video. Think they were called ‘chrome chasers’ or something to that affect. Remember being entertained by the 30 minute video.

That must have been "AWESOME" if Ladin was involved.....;)

That makes more sense. But then I'd hafta' learn how to move a podcast from my desk top computer to my phone or MP3 player. Details, details. Fukit.
