The original knife thread.

Figured I’d ask here: does anyone have a good way to sharpen a convex (like an axe blade in cross section) grind blade? The info I’ve found online is confusing or has contradictory directions (one site says one way, another source says another).

I’ve a knife that’s getting fairly dull and has a convex grind on it. I can sharpen a flat grind blade (as on most knives, chisels, planes, etc), but convex knife? Not yet.

Nice knife. I have an F1 pro. Same convex grind. I don't have a straight answer for you, but there is a youtube channel by DBK (Dutch Bushcraft Knives). Hilarious dudes doing reviews on every sort of knife. I think they have done one or more videos on sharpening, and I believe it's related to the convex grind. If no luck, check out their video on stropping. I have since made my own strop block, using a medium compound on one side, and a fine compound on the other side. On of the best discoveries I have ever encountered. And it doesn't really matter your grind angle.

Thanks! I’ll check them out.

I don’t have many non-food knives, but 1/2 of them are Fallkniven, so knowing how to sharpen them would be nice.

Gerber Mk II
Fallkniven F1
Fallkniven A1
Fallkniven (the one in question. Don’t know name)
Random dive knife
Leatherman

I believe your folder is the 'P' model. It's a nice knife. Reminds me of this William Henry 'evolution series', that I used to have. I've never managed to procure a Mk II. Some day....

Cool, thanks again!

If the Gerber wasn’t one of the few things I’m sentimental about, I’d send it to you. Absolutely zero utility for me and it really just gathers dust.

I use sand paper over a piece of neoprene to sharpen my convex edges. Use it like a strop and the neoprene will bend following the convex edge. I go progressively finer and then to the strop.
If that makes sense.

A belt like the Ken Onion Worksharp would work, I think.

I too am a knife guy all my life. Have a basket full. Many Case, Saks, Benchmades and a couple Spydercos. Recently I’ve turned back to SAKs though, particularly the 91mms. I have a dozen or so models, including 84mms and 93mms, but the Spartan is my favorite edc. The small blade is useful and the large is just right for an apple. Plus scales are handy. I have hundreds of tools around the house so multi-tools usually fall short.

Which grit do you use? I’ve got everything from 40 to 8000

This thread has cost me some money… I think I’ve impulse bought 4 new knives so far after reading folks’ posts. :)
You and me both! This thread got me interested in adding to my collection again. I like old knives.

Here's a matched set that arrived today in the mail. I've got a couple others on the way. I'm open to trades at the swap meet!

3 more from my myriad of knives.
A Schrade "Uncle Henry" 227UH of Chinesium origin, which was actually very sharp from the factory.

I don't deal with that vendor anymore because when I ordered this knife, i spec'd it with a dark handle and got this yellow one. Tried to return it and they refused to accept it back.

The red one is a Milwaukee hawkbill. Cheap at a big box store. I like it because it's double locking. You have to unlock it, (push button) to open the blade. And then there's the liner lock to close it. So, pretty safe to carry.

That little Gerber, I don't recall how old it is. Blade is only like 2 inches and it's stayed sharp and in pocket rotation for a long time.
