The “call your shot” thread

Here’s the rules - you post what you think you’re going to catch before your trip. After your trip, edit your post to append the results. Edit original post rather than post a reply so everyone’s prediction and results stay together.

Gold tier: correctly guess all the different species, total number of fish caught, and length (or weight if you prefer) of best fish caught.

Silver tier: correctly guess all species caught (pretty easy if you’re only after one species, but hey it’s a pretty stupid game).

Bronze tier: catch any of your predicted species

Honorable mention: catch a fish

Black and white tier: you my friend have been skunked.

I’ll play.

I’m dropping my kid off at preschool in 30 and then finally taking out my Commander for the first time in the big W. I didn’t have enough time to get my garmin set up but it’s more about just getting used to getting around on the boat: rowing, casting from it, etc.

Given all of the above, plus it’s a bit cold and grey I’m calling shot at exactly ZERO smallies. I believe in my self. I can do this.

UPDATE! Gold star for me!
Dropped my kid off, and fished for a about 3 hours with nothing. No eats, nothing. But to be fair, I no next to nothing about this fishery and have a lot to learn. It was great to be on the water. Next step, find some fish.

Ultamitely this was just a shakedown with my Commander. It was really just learning how to row, cast while seated, etc.

UPDATE
Not a single prediction came true. Zero cutthroat, zero steelhead, but released one smolt.
95% certain I found a fish - barely mouthed it 6-8 times from the middle to last half of the swing.
That’s just enough to make me want to get back out and find another more aggressive fish!

Congrats on avoiding black and white tier sir!

The Committee is still hotly debating the legalities of predicting a skunk, but provisionally, congratulations on your golden skunk award.

I’ve got a John Day float trip lined up June 10-13. I have zero desire to count all the little smallies I catch, so I’m going to have to tweak my prediction approach. Let’s go with:

1. No fewer than five distinct topwater flies that successfully catch fish

2. One respectable 12” red eye on a big ol bunny pattern

3. No fewer than seven beers per day.

Report update:

Wow, that was wet. The river was at ~700 cfs last year when we floated it. When we arrived this time, it was at 6,000. By the time we left it was cresting at 12,000 and was complete chocolate milk.

The good news is that despite high waters, it fished ok the first couple days before the big rains hit. Bigger fish were out as well. No fish the last two days, though.

Bronze tier for me as I definitely did not meet my non-beer goals. Hell, it was so wet I don’t think I met my beer goals either.

Sounds like you’re going to need a boat just for your beers ;)

Now THIS is my kind of prediction

Seems a little low on the beer/day number...

Yeah, but someone seems to bring cocktail stuff every year too…
thanks goodness.....hang in there....

I sense the outline of a drinking game here
I definitely lost that game last time I went to the John day. But then again it was in April and the river was high, dirty and cold (it was more so a camping trip, with an excuse to fish).

I lose that game every trip to Merwin....

Dude, didn’t you catch like 6 the last time you went?!
hooked. I only landed 4. I think I had 5 beers that day.
