Support Your Local Fly Shop

Popped in to Avid Angler before the Husky game. Really fun to hit have visited a couple places. You folks with shops in town are really lucky. Picked up some reading material. Also found a nice hen hackle and a bunch of other stuff. View attachment 92368
I’m like 0 for 4 finding a shop with hen hackle. I finally hit the bullet and had to order a saddle online.

My “local” shop is in Maupin and I never seem to get out of there for less than $100 (often much more). They also have very fast shipping and when I order over the phone it gets shipped out that afternoon and arrives a couple of days later. One time I will have to submit an online order but I enjoy talking with folks in the shop. Our daughter lives down the road from Pacific Fly Fishers and always stop by when we are visiting.

Well shit, looks like Emerald Water Anglers in Seattle were robbed recently. If you're in the West Seattle area, the shop is worth checking out and there's tons of other attractions (food, beer, music stores, etc) in the area.

Damn... as if Dave wasn't already in the dumps about how things were going at that location. Hope they are able to bounce back.

Yeah I hope so too. I did not realize they were hit AGAIN. Super lame. I went in last Wednesday to put a little gift card toward a brand new fishing rain jacket; was thinking a Swiftcurrent would be a great investment and help the local shop. I was surprised to find they had none since they had a ton of 'em before, and heard it was because of the robbery, but I didn't realize it was a new robbery that prior weekend. Ugh.

edit, wait, maybe this DID happen after I visited. Me brain work slow today

In 2021 EWA was hit 3 times losing thousands in merchandise. It appears they were hit this past Aug (2023) and just a couple days ago on Black Friday.
I know there has been other times (years) too. The insurance rates if not already must be going through the roof, or worse insurance companies might not be willing to insure the business any more.

Or he no longer files an insurance claim because it's less expensive to eat the loss.

Or so I hear......

It’s been years (unfortunately) since myself or many of my friends have stepped into our local shop. This includes several guides and deeply embedded locals. Note to shop owners: maybe be less blatantly partisan with customers, and consider supporting at least some fish/water conservation groups that do the dirty work to keep your fish/water-based business viable.

That said, my money stays in OR/WA to the extent practical. I see no reason to send business to Connecticut just to save 5%.

I think you're right; that was the previous robbery. They get hit so often.

Dave is a former avid angler employee. Good guy. Feel real bad for him/shop. Eventually it will be to much to keep going if something doesn’t change. (I think). I remember Nathan Keen being really pissed off when the avid angler was hit and that’s when it was in the mall area of Lake Forest Park. But they had an outside door and they busted in that way and stole $$$$$ worth of merchandise. It was the same morning that outdoor emporium Seattle was hit too. Nathan was a good guy but felt compelled to return to the corporate world from what he said. The fly shop owners are allowed to have families and when they start the family the business needs to allow for family time , and if ain't….. then somethings gotta give. Support has best as you can. If not, the info with 25-30 dollar purchase of flies or tippet or whatever will soon be gone.

A more positive recent story - The Avid Angler isn't exactly "local" to me, but I stopped in a few times earlier this year as one of my son's activities was in the area on Fridays for a good part of the spring. I picked up a hat on one visit and happened to be wearing it when the family and I stopped for lunch a Buoy Brewing in Astoria on the way back from the OR coast last Saturday. Walked past a woman sitting with her family who said "Hey Avid Angler - my brother Ryan owns that place!" Come to think of it, the same hat also sparked up a conversation at the Kauai airport last April.
