Looks like the 2024 wildfire season is starting up. I figure we can have a place to chat about it.

With any luck, this thread will have a short life and the fires won't be so bad.

This is the first morning I've really noticed some smoke haze sneaking over the cascades up here in the NW corner. Nothing on the ground, but high haze to the east and filtered sunlight in the AM.

According to my favorite PNW weather guy, the unstable weather that rolled through yesterday caused a fair number of lightning strikes in the past 24 hours. Let's hope that doesn't kick up more fires.

(lightning convo and sat imagery is at ~10:39)

I noticed the light this morning, too. There’s a certain beauty to that golden color, but I hate what it portends. It seems like we had lush Spring growth that is drying out quickly.

Due to a wildfire, Highway 20 is closed east of Ross Lake between milepost 148 near the Granite Creek bridge and milepost 158 just east of the Rainy Pass trailhead.

Since we're talking about fire, I was surprised that we didn't have the 20 Page rant about the 4th of July fireworks like we normally do.

I keep an eye on Bend, smoke and wild-fires being one of the factors that hastened our move, This AM was worse, but the first day I had seen bad air quality.

Number of fires appears to be on the uptick as well

Oregon had a nice little storm system roll thru the other evening and it has spawned many a fire. Even though there were blue skies this morning; there is a hint of smoke (smell) in the air. Not gonna like this at all.

I was out backpacking and came back Tuesday night and the damn storm blew all the corn down in my garden!

The Easy Fire is not far from the Pioneer Fire along Lake Chelan which is expected to continue burning through Halloween. According to Inciweb, the Pioneer Fire has grown to more than 25,000 acres. Nearly 800 firefighters are on scene and the fire is only about 14% contained.

We drove from our house in the Tri Cities to Gig Harbor this morning. Ash on the truck parked in the driveway when we left, heavy smoke through Yakima and clean salt air in Puget Sound. It’s fire season, but so far not as bad as we’ve seen before at home. A few years ago the smoke from fires in British Columbia was so thick, retreating to the basement was the only way to avoid it.

This is the first season where I feel like I actually have a grasp at just how big these fires can get, and it isn't even August yet :( For me at least I feel like it can be hard to understand the scale of these things from what is often reported on the news. But over memorial day this year some good friends and I hiked the popular Chelan Lakeshore trail from Prince creek to Stehekin with an overnight stop at Moore point. And now nearly the entire route is either burned or burning and Stehekin is on a level 2 evac notice. (https://lakechelannow.com/level-2-evacuation-begins-july-25-for-stehekin/)

Here's a capture of what at least OnX says the burned area is (might be old, I'm not sure how often they update the map). That light blue track at the top was day 2 of our trip (about 7 miles). And day one of that trip was the 10ish miles from prince creek to Moore Point. 1721999672958.png
