Depends how you put up the contrasting viewpoint, if it is trite and belittling then that, I would argue is trolling, if it is thoughtful and backed up appropriately, then it is legitimate debate.

I have been a member of some sites where 'The Flame Pit", the 'Dungeon" or 'Cry Me a River' were tried. They did not work out - maybe because they could not catch an unsuspecting or gullible member and getting their jollies crucifying someone else. Those members ended up bringing the shit back onto the main forum.

I agree with @Salmo_g completely about discussing/disagreeing with a member's message and not taking it to a personal level. Personal attacks happen more often than many think... It is not how the post was intended when written but rather how it is received which can be quite different. When discussing/disagreeing with a message, providing links to other sources can be quite helpful because it is not arguing about 'IMO' but rather sources and methods. It may be a better way to convey a thought and add to the discussion than the member could on their own.

I have asked the MODs if I could start a thread (before I posted it) knowing it could be political but was definitely fishing related. They concurred. But to start a thread but adding a fishing twist to the title knowing it will digress into unwanted territory should be nipped in the bud in my thinking. A few of these threads getting shutdown will let everyone know where the boundaries are.

I know I have overstepped the line if a few of my posts. I apologize for that. I will work harder to not have it happen in the future. Maybe write it, delete it, rewrite it, delete it and try again to determine if I can better express myself without crossing the line (or get it out of my system) so it does not need to be posted at all...

Then arn't we back to the status quo 99% of the time here? The only thing I have really noticed is an uptick in more funny banter. Nastiness, still very rare. Although the fisheries management stuff has had its moments. All in all, fun site, mods have done a good job so far.

And we may add another bit of history: The Drake forum met its demise because of this very thing. It was "anything goes" until everyone left because it just wasn't worth it anymore.

Like we've said: We built this place out of a passion for wanting to have this community. It isn't motivated by money (and all contributions we get from members go back in to the business, not a paycheck for us). It's motivated by the people and the great content, both fishing and otherwise. If the bullshit starts hitting critical mass, then it isn't fun for us anymore, and something we're doing as a hobby business then becomes a chore. We do not want it to get to that point, and honestly don't see us getting there. We're trying to keep away from the slippery slope that will send us down that path, though.

Think of this as mostly preemptive rather than reactive.
 
I don’t have time to read all these posts, but I will say that 99% of the time it is easy to identify who is posting the politically charged threads and content and getting people riled. It is really frustrating that they always play like they don’t intend it that way, but they are full of shit.
 
There are plenty of sites where one can discuss/argue world issues, without dragging them onto here. I come onto this site to share a common interest in all things fly fishing....I'm sure most others are here for the same thing. I'm old enough to have realized that ideas different from mine aren't necessarily wrong, they're just different, and there's room for both, w/o having to take offense. I think the moderators do a great job of keeping us on the rails. I've seen (and left) other sites where too often things are allowed to get out of hand. Many thanks to the mods !
 
Think there are a handful of us that would like to see a weather sub-forum that consists of posted articles on the climate change/weather we are experiencing, conducted without politics, attacks, or snark. All of our time on the rivers, lakes and salt is weather dependent, and we are experiencing profound ongoing changes regardless of causality, or what side of the aisle one supports. For those offended by such discussions, why not just ignore them.

Could say that about every post in the general, if your offended, why don't you just ignore. I agree that weather and fires and everything else is definitely fishing related, NW related and usually big news, that's why it pops up on the general forum a lot. But a climate change sub with no 'politics' will just fill up with climate change stuff and be the good Ole boys club I was describing earlier. Alienating people.
 
If I'm standing in a Thai restaurant and want a taco, I don't waste time arguing with the owner about why he doesn't want to run a taco restaurant. That's his choice. It's a free country.

I can either:

1. Decide that even though I like tacos better, I'll have Thai food because I like the restaurant/company/ambience/etc.
2. Leave and go to a place that serves tacos.
3. Exercise my god given American right to prove all the fools wrong, and open up my own Thai/Taco restaurant. Then laugh to myself as I swirl congnac and smoke a cigar when the Thai place goes out of business because everyone wants my Yam Pla Dook Foo Chimchangas.

All are great options. Pick one of them.

Forum software is Xenforo, front end is WordPress. Have at it! The new TacoThaiFishingShitpost forum will be up and running in no time.

I love forums, there should be more of them. So I'm not being disingenuous when I encourage people to start their own forums if they don't like the one they are on. If PNWFF doesn't fit you, make yourself a place that does and run it however you like.
