Small creeks

I've been chomping at the bit to fish for searuns in rivers lately. With most of my locals closed right now, I brought out my little fiberglass rod and went South yesterday for some small stream fun after a raft issue deterred me from doing a float on a bigger river. After looking back over the past few years of fishing, I tend to have my most memorable fish memories from October.

With my little glass rod and old Wheatley fly box full of size 6-12 wetflys in tow, I found a new to me creek with a bunch of pesky searuns. It is hard to fathom they travel this far as it's over 70 miles from the salt but I'm certain these were searun and not residents.

I swung a little black beadhead bugger in front of an even smaller creek that came in and what I thought was a big resident rainbow crushed the fly mid swing in the chop. It cartwheeled twice, went on three little runs, and as I brought it closer to hand I saw the blush rose cheeks, distinct yellow fins, and cutthroat freckles. A male searun cutthroat in full color. Unfortunately, no pictures of that guy as I didn't have my net with me. I didn't think I was going to need it and of course he spit the hook as I grabbed the leader.

A bunch of these golden guys made a for another memorable October outing. Searuns are just the coolest.

I’ve been GTSing it ( Google That Shit) much of the afternoon and was beginning to wonder if it was an Arctic Char???…but that couldn’t/shouldn’t be

I am absolutely not strong at IDing fish and thought I’d read somewhere bulls don’t have oblong spots so I was more confused.

thanks for the ID

Ah fall, the flow has doubled and the wind is blowing.

A couple splashy eats and a couple drowning swirls to an october caddis but couldn't hook up. Actually found an indicator set up was the way to go today.

Some andronamous smolts still about, more silver than it looks here (note the round tail). Might stay resident.

The smaller residents have pointy tails and blushed cheeks.

I think this one is adfluvial (the better one threw a hook). Fights different, holds different places.

The wind made things tough, but that's the only complaint from this cowboy, what a blessed life.

Only one fish at a time? 😉

Zoomed in it looks like both top and bottom of the tail are just sticking through the net holes.

Tom,

Are you connected to a lake or are you referring to the big river and its resevoir for the adfluvial fish?

I think they come up from the columbia here and snake on the other stream. Smaller and earlier than steelhead. They may show as early as August, but they are not around except for fall. They get hard to find by the time steelhead arive.
