Signs of Fall

It’s on its way.

I heard the unmistakable calls of Sandhills Cranes. Looked up and there they were.

Also, keep an eye on the trees. They know what's up.

I had them summer on a lake and marsh next to my property in Alaska; quite a few, several hundred or more, summered at mouth of the Kasilof river. Awesome birds.

I heard them as well today at my home in the Tri-Cities. High in the sky and I was not able to locate them, but the call was unmistakeable.

The grass is growing again.
My dog and the sheep and goats next door are getting their winter coats.
Haven't had the fog until mid-morning yet.

For me, it's the arrival of migrating Pacific white fronted geese. They make a transoceanic flight from Alaska and often make landfall along the Oregon Coast. I love hearing them while I'm fishing tidewater in September.

In New England where I live, the first indication is red leaves on the Swamp Maples. It has already started !
