Show me your bass

Saint Croix River Fall fatty. This was one of the hardest fighting fish I've ever hooked. My buddy who was on the oars handed me a Murdich minnow he tied up and a few minutes later got this monster. I grew up fishing smallies on the Delaware, Schuylkill, and Susquehanna but never crossed paths with one like this.

Very nice. That is such a cool river.
Were you upstream from Stillwater?

Brisk mornings have dropped the water to around 50, and today began with heavy fog. No crossing the lake, but then there wasn't much need for it. 2 good hours pitching the pads and raised pond lilies produced a good number of strikes, all on black. Patient strip setting paid off - below are two of the better ones.

Looking back on my year of bassin', which really only takes place during pre-spawn for me (just too many other target species other times of the year). One of my largest in the last several years at just shy of 20" (I personally haven't broken 20" in over 5 years on this fishery), but this last year was great for quality, especially this particular day (mid-May).

It's funny, several years ago I bought a bump board just to see what it's all about (you know those anglers who only swear by the bump board, right?)....I honestly didn't notice there to be much of a difference between my apron and the board, maybe 1/4-1/2" and it would go either way depending on how fat the fish was. Of course my board goes to 20" rather than 18", so I guess there's that....
