Shops newsletters, reports and... hotspotting?

We eat a lot of beans. I'll make a big pot and we'll make Memela's for breakfast, Sopes, Bean/Avo/Rice Bowls or just eat pot beans with good bread. Rancho Gordo is a local-ish favorite.
I eat a lot of beans as well. Am I really missing out not eating these artisanal beans? I usually get them in bulk sections with high turnover. Do you use a pressure cooker, or is this low and slow on the stovetop?

I can’t tell you if they’ll be worth it for you, but they’re definitely worth it for me. 1lb is like 8$ and lasts us all week for multiple meals. They’re so damn good. I cook them low and slow but I always try to make them the day before I plan on eating them—like soup always best the next day.

They ever address your concerns?

Seems odd to me that if you're trying to build a sense of community that they wouldn't at least give you a response (even a simple, "I hear you and understand your concerns...." even if they don't mean it, would go a long ways). I've always felt that constructive communication is key and if it only goes one way, it's not constructive.

Just one "dude who fishes" opinion...

Still at it. I wonder if Olallie will see additional pressure with the latest hot spot. I don't fish it, sorry to those that do.

It’s interesting. In my email I sent this week, I asked why they don’t name their bass or carp spots (hint—it’s because they guide those spots and stand to lose money). But in this weeks email, they talk about how they’re guiding “new” trout locations close in to Portland but don’t name the spots. Coincidence?

Regardless, no response to any of my emails, I even sent this thread so they could join the conversation with their community.

Well their guide is still in his usual haunts. Saw him the last two times I was out, including today.

Please share with us the guide's usual haunts.... Inquiring minds want to know LOL

I moved away from Portland 4 years ago, but I still receive the NWFFO newsletter emails, and I have to say, if I still lived in Portland, they would irritate the hell out of me for giving up so many details. In fact, living 7 hours away, they still irritate me. They have just the wrong balance of hot spotting somewhat sensitive or relatively unknown local fisheries, with "hire our guides" to show you the secret places you really want to fish but could never find on your own. I always liked Jack Hagen and patronized the shop quite frequently when he owned it, but the new owners seem like jack asses to me. They consistently have a really self-serving message that they try and sell as "inclusive".

Shots fired.

"Some of you may remember a site and forum called Westfly. Westfly was an amazing community of anglers and the people I met helped transform my angling success. Years ago Westly "shut down" as creator "Uncle Fuzzy", Scott Richmond, simply got tired of operating it. Scott joked with me a couple of times that maybe I should take it over for him.

Fast forward to now, and we have built a forum on our website for you all to connect. Will it ever take the place of Westly, doubtful, but we do believe it can be a place where we can connect around a virtual campfire and share our successes, patterns, trips, and so much more together."

Not even a mention of PNWFF or ugh WFF. Acting like a void has existed going forward from the Westfly shutdown.

I wonder how censored it will be if respectful differences of opinion are presented. It could be a good opportunity to discuss unanswered email questions from this thread.

I don't have much of an opinion. I just fish. 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of fishers and the rest go home unfulfilled. So how much pressure is really on the fish? I've heard both sides of the argument. Here's the other side. Some claim an unloved waterway is one soon to be developed or brutalized in some other way. Getting the word out, people might protect streams while we love them to death. There is a balance in there somewhere and I do not know where that is.

Look at colorado facing a fur ban and Cali already with a fur ban. There aren't enough flyfishers and fur users to fight the emotion of PETA-like crys to protect mink and other fur species that have noting to do with fly fishing but we are caught up in the emotion.

I honestly believe we will loose our right to fish in Yellowstone national park within my lifetime. Eradication of non-native fish is a 1st step to a total fishing ban in the park. People think I'm crazy. You put that to a vote and I bet fishermen loose.

We know that hatchery fish ruin the genetic diversity of native steelhead. The hatchery supports the fishery. Can you imagine if there was no hatchery and only wild steelhead. They would be so rare that few would fish them. Instead of legions of fishermen along the Clearwater you might have river front condos and no protections for the few remaining wild steelhead.

We need every fishermen. We benefit by the growth of fishing and growth of flyfishing in the diversity of products we can buy and the continued advancements in rod design, reel design, and wading boots as examples.

I can't imagine they have enough of a potential user base for the foundations of a successful forum. Doesn't worry me one bit.

What is it that doesn't worry you? Is this a competition of some kind?

Not sure what you're asking. Someone posted up "shots fired" as in the shop was directly coming after us. I stated that I didn't find it particularly interesting or concerning. I know what it takes to have a forum that functions long term, and know that starting from scratch is going to be a tall order to put it mildly. I don't see them taking our membership or vice versa.
