Seeking Real Opinions on Elk Rifles

I shot my buddies 6.5 PRC 2 weeks ago…immediately ordered one. It had the recoil of a pellet gun, slight exaggeration but not much. Recoil sucks and is responsible for more poor shooting than anyone wants to admit.

Much is overdone of caliber size as it equates to efficiency in killing. Tons of great information out there. Take your time and get yourself educated. The XO pack guys 3 took 3 AK bull moose with a single shot from a 6 Creedmore…even smaller than the popular 6.5. You can watch it on YouTube as well as all of their research and testing prior to the hunt.

The Hunt backcountry Podcast has some great episodes that demystify many of the “wives tails” that go along with hunting rifles. I really enjoyed an episode where they had a contract hunter on…a guy who has killed thousands of animals has a perspective very few ever will.

If you're looking at a rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, take a good look at the Sauer XT100 Classic.

However, I agree the 6.5 Creedmoor might be bit light for elk sized game. My elk rifle is a Kimber-refurbished Mauser 98, chambered in 280 Ackley Improved. But since that's an obscure cartridge, go with a 308, 30.06, 300 Win mag or a 7mm Rem Mag

I can now choose from a CVA Cascade 300 Win Mag, a custom Howa .308 or a Bergara 7mm Rem Mag. depending on area and conditions. Should be good now.

I know I'm more accurate with a Creedmoor vs a 7mm or 300 Ultra Mag, and would take accuracy over velocity any time. With a good hit, a Creedmoor should be plenty.

What is the Creedmoor's weight if you don't mind my asking?

Evan, if you hand load that 6.5 creedmoore, you can get a little more velocity out of it. I'm running about 2750 with 140 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. Working up a load for the 140 grain Accubond now.

Yeah I've thought about it. I go through a lot of 9mm and 45acp and those have been inspiring me to start hand loading. I'd get a Creedmoor die as well if I started.

What do you mean "now?" I grew up on a farm and have harvested many, many furry and feathered critters with firearms. Always been doin the shootin

I did have a lull in such activity for a while as my entire gun collection got stolen by a former family member. Between that and being super committed to steelhead during hunting season got me distracted. But I've been going back to my old ways of late.

I also do the tunas. And the halibuts. And the slammons. I even still do steelhead, but prefer them straight out of the Columbia proper.
