@jasmillo and I took a big chance on a remote lake today, a long drive plus a short hike in hope of some decent fishing.

Our little gamble paid off, fishing was excellent, and the fish weren’t dinks either. The cutthroat here are some of the most perfect, healthy, hard fighting high jumping fish I’ve ever seen. Each one of them was flawless, plump and vibrant in colors.

Even got to try Jason’s little glass rod fishing emerger a bit, hooked two and landed one. Glass rods are something else, very interesting.
Stopped by the shore to take a leak and I inadvertently slipped the life vest into the water, the damn thing popped like an air bag. Startled me a bit mid stream, never owned one of these type before so I totally forgot about the immersion trigger, well that worked well :)

Super fun morning, so many fish and surrounded by the woods, you can only hear birds working the midge hatch. This is going to be a yearly thing now for sure.

That was a very fun day. Lou had the hot hand early. He kicked to one section of the lake and mopped them up while I kicked all over hell and back picking up a fish here and there. Once I realized he had been parked in the same spot for 25 minutes, I figured out what the deal was and did exactly what all our friends in the lake etiquette thread would do; I kicked over there as fast as my flippers would take me! Such healthy, plump fish and pound for pound some of the hardest fighting freshwater trout I have encountered in western WA.

Some of the better fish today.

Those are pretty fish.

Nice work guys! A few years ago I fished a lake that holds nice cutts and fits the “long drive short hike” description after dropping my daughter off at camp. I did well with a Lady Caroline fly @Dave Westburg handed me on a lunch break at another cutthroat lake but not that well.

Here on Fidalgo island there is a lake that takes some walking to get to. The Coastal Cutthroat there can be quite large. Simply beautiful fish that fight like hell. I once gave one of my fish to a family that was fishing from shore, instead of releasing it like all the others. That Coastal Cutthroat had extremely red colored flesh. It was "stocked" as a fingerling but it (undoubtedly ) ended up being a very tasty example of what a true trout should taste like.

How was the short trail in? Was the gate open or did you have to walk the road to the trail?
