Removable Fighting Butts?

Seeking opinions on removable butts on larger (7-12) weight fly rods. Yes, no, good, bad? Opinions on fighting butts in general?

Agree with you removable fighting butts are great on 7-12 weights. I find they 'get in the way' and are uncomfortable on 5 and 6 weights.

I'm going to build an 8# and wondered if a removable butt would be better than a permanent one.

I like butts...

Wondered if it would get in the way fishing on the river. I could also make a longer one to use switch rod, 2 hand style when my shoulder starts aching. The joys of building your own rod is, you can customize it to your own needs.

I love fighting butts. Have zero interest or need for a rod without one personally.

I am curious, what would be the reason for wanting to remove one on a rod in that size range?

Do you have any on your 6#'s?

This is an interesting concept.

Nick,
Like you, I like fighting butts but there are some rods you could use both in the salt and for fishing applications where a butt really isn’t needed. I guess to turn it into more of a trout stick. Say going to a river to toss some dry flies. I’ve owned a few rods with removable butts and have liked the option of removing it.

Yeah, I can definitely understand that. I guess I was more curious about the heavier rods mentioned in the OP (7-12 wts). Just trying to think of a reason one would want to remove the FB on a larger rod like that. Maybe for some river fishing applications or something I suppose.

And ya, I forget that people throw dry flies. ;)

If you take the fighting butt off a 12 wt and fish a gurgler, you can say you are dry fly fishing… 😂

This is the Echo OHS concept. I am a big big fan.

I built a rod once with a removable fighting butt, somewhere just upstream of the Clay Banks run, I noticed the removable butt piece was 'removed'. I suppose by now there's not much left of it. I wonder where in the Strait of Juan de Fuca it might be.

@Wetswinger - for me, I like fighting butts and they don't need to be removable for the reason noted above. Did you sell the rod you recently had advertised? It was very nicely done.
