Relaxing Afternoon on a Put and Take

Took a half day and hit a local put and take lake this afternoon. It’s a year around lake but honestly best for stockers and small bass in my experience. It’s super close though and worth hitting to scratch an itch if time is limited.

Lots of dink rainbows, a couple of small cuts and jumbo. Probably stocked this winter. Normally I do not get excited about a jumbo that fights like an old leather boot but after ten 10-12 inch rainbows it’s nice to see some girth on the end of the line. Especially when it’s not expected considering the stocking reports.

Ok, it’s not a world class destination by any means but it beats working in an office on a 70 degree April day in western Washington ;).

One jumbo over twenty…

Had to run some errands for spring projects this morning so decided to hit the local put and take again. Yesterday’s lingcod outing with @Kfish was a bust though I did catch my PB rockfish which was nice. Not on the fly though, so decided to use my trip to Lowe’s as an excuse to spend a couple hours fishing this lake which is on the way. The wife said she was doing some spring cleaning of the “closets”. Ok, I’ll leave you to it then!

Kind of what you’d expect. Lots of dead spots and then lots of action once you found fish. No jumbos today. Lots on .5 to 1.0 lb fish. A couple cuts that fought hard. Maybe native, maybe not. Green buggers/leeches stripped on a type 3/5 while kicking around the lake was the ticket.

Beats cleaning closets…

I've had a really enjoyable lake season so far. I'm especially enjoying trying to figure out what tricks really trigger fish to bite in different conditions. It's always a blast when the day gets interrupted by the occasional jumbo. Heck, this year, I even hooked a mid-teens steelhead (didn't land it, but laughed out loud for about 5 minutes wrangling it on a 5-wt. with 4x tippet) in one of the lakes I like to bank walk this time of year. When you find a wad of fresh planters, you can really learn a lot if you're paying attention... or, you can just catch fish until you're sick of it without wasting too much time figuring out why. Either way, it's fun, and a great way to shake off the winter shack nasties.
