Anyone fish the Redington Field Kits yet? Curious to hear feedback, particularly on the Bass or the euro-nymph versions. I have a credit with Redington burning a hole in pocket….

To date I have never tried Euro nymphing with a rod designed for purpose. On the Bass field kit, was thinking about getting it as a truck rod (because you never know when you might need a 7 wt……)

I don't have any experience with them, but I can tell the euro kit would be a hard pass. The rod is probably fine, but the reel is no good, the leader is no good and you don't need a FIPS line. For $430, you can do far better...
  • $230 gets you a Grey's FIN combo. The line and leader are both suboptimal, but the rod and reel are good.
  • $410 gets you...
    • Echo Carbon XL Euro Nymph ($200)
    • Danielsson DryFly ($150)
    • SA AirCel ($30)
    • Troutbitten Mono Rig ($30)

Thanks for this intel. I am focusing more on the bass kit at this point. I have a $200 credit i can apply so the bass kit is a sub $200 proposition for me.

I have the bass field kit (I know this is two years old). I love it, it casts wonderfully and it looks killer.

Just an FYI…the Redington Euro Nymph Kit can currently be purchased off of Amazon for $199.00 with free shipping.

I have interacted with Brian from Mad River Outfitters for years and he is convinced that the Redington bass outfit is the best of these “all in one” products on the market. It includes one of Redington’s best selling reels, a quality Rio fly line and apparently a very good rod. Here is Brian’s review

Nice to see quality entry-level (or just low use case) products getting some enthusiasm. Over in that toxic wasteland of a forum, they are currently beating a poster senseless for using Maxcatch reels.
Not everyone has an unlimited budget, or wishes to commit to a style.
Nice review.

I haven’t needed to use the drag on any of my reels yet, makes me think it’s more of a saltwater thing than anything. Definitely in the 5wt and under realm, it’s a line holder.

Well, bought the 5wt Field Kit, and the tip snapped within 30 minutes of being on the water when I hit a snag. Returning it for a refund and I'm gonna crawl back into my fiberglass hole 👀

I bough the 7 wt “bass” kit and have had it out a bit.

Rod casts fine and the reel is fine as well for my “truck rod extra boat rod” use case expectations.

Reserving judgement but so far I am not keen on the line it came with (warmwater quickshooter 7wt). It def seems “kinkier” than the Rio warmwater predator line, or the specialty bass lines from SA. Once I have the chance to actually use it in warmwater I will have a more informed take.

I put Cortland Bass line on mine and it’s been great for a couple seasons - I might get the same thing when I replace it.

I picked up a trout Spey field kit for 179 bucks at Sierra. They were selling several different field kit combos all for under 200 at one time
I received a 11’3 4 weight 4 piece, redington run 7/8 reel loaded with backing and a rio integrated trout Spey 325 line with a mow tip 5/5 sink T-8 and a 4’ rio leader. Rod and reel carrying case.

Still have not tested out on water. It appears to be a solid package. Not sure what family the rod comes from but it is not a fast action rod by any means. More like a medium not so fast action. The reel retails for 139 on its own.
Plan on taking it to the Yak soon just to play with it some.

Out of curiosity is the rio line that it came with the skagit version or the sort of hybrid scandi line?
