Rain

Watching the news yesterday, it looked like Southern California and the Sierras got lots of moisture. Some areas got 5” of rain.
Looks wet here starting Sunday.

Last night at 5:30 PM I went to a friend's house about 5 miles away during what would normally be near the end of rush hour. Starting at my place (380' elev) it was 37°, there was a almost an inch of snow on the lawn, and the street in our cul-de-sac had slush. In about 2 miles after making a turn off the highway there was 2" - 3" on the side of a major arterial with compact snow and ice on the road at 463' elev. I had to descend into consecutive valleys then ascend a couple of the steepest hills in the area. At the top of the first hill began a 1.5 mile backup to the top of the second hill. People had stopped in the road, in both directions uphill and downhill in the valleys, and walked away from their cars. In my 4Runner with Wildpeak AT4Ws I joined those with AWD & 4WD 🚙 , and other brave souls with 2WD and good all season or winter tires who were driving over the centerline around them while the opposite lane was ascending or descending on the shoulders to keep traffic moving on the hills.

No snow in the forecast here in Ephrata but looking at Snoqualmie Pass next week it looks like lots of snow starting Wednesday. Bring it on!
 
I was curious as to the amount of precipitation the PNW has been getting this winter so I went to the SNOTEL website.
SWE is quite low. :(

That is without a doubt the weirdest SWE map I have ever seen.

Looks like with the exception of the Yakima basin, eastern Washington should be fine for ag and electric generation.

Are there any forests left to burn in eastern Oregon??? Looks like another bad fire season for them.
 
A heavy PNW rain and snow pattern has set up for late February into March. It's a waste of thought and emotion to prematurely declare a drought. Wait until mid April or so to visit snowpack sites.
 
Looking at stats and the latest climate and weather predictions, it’s extremely unlikely the Cascades will get to median SWE, and only about a 10% chance to reach the range of “typical.” There’s also about a 10% chance it could reach record lows.
I do know that whether it’s a “waste” to know and think about this depends on what someone’s responsibilities and interests are.

It’s an even more concerning situation in Oregon and Idaho.

Raining here and on the mountain now. We're at 91% for precipitation, which would seem fine, but only 40% of normal snowpack, so no storage. Still some winter left but I'm becoming less hopeful.
 
Liking this rain. A couple tags have pinged. The fish have been holding real low and ignoring everything for awhile. This should start to bring 'em up.
 
We are over 11" for month so far (9" is average for February). This morning's area forecast discussion from NWS Portland suggests that the rain will start tapering off this week.
