My son and I had a great time trolling off GG. Saw a pod on the surface and wished that I had my fly rod with me! 
It can be very useful for sure to stay with a pod, or on top of a bait ball but also be ready to move quickly since they won’t stay at one spot for long.
It can help when those situations arise, but I think the best use for it when coho fishing is spot locking on a rip you want to fish. Though drifting those can be very productive too. The bow mount gets deployed more frequently for SRC than coho for me. Great to have though for when you need it!
Do you burn a lot of fuel looking for coho on the surface?
I saw a light blue (or was it seafoam?) hulled boat blasting north past me and my little local point yesterday morning, wondered if it was the legendary J & K on the hunt for coho.
Fishings been slower this week compared to last. 1-2 yesterday and 2-2 this morning. All fish landed were wilds and properly released. When I was fighting my second fish of the morning a 5lb coho swam right beside me in the water. I reached down to try to tail it but it kicked away when I touched it 
I guess that makes me 2-3 today.
I don’t usually take photos of coho I’m releasing but this one was being cooperative and gave me a hell of a fight.

I don’t normally spend a ton of time looking for them on the surface. Usually when fly fishing for coho from the boat, I’m basically fishing similar stuff that I would from shore but that I cannot get access too. There are a few exceptions. Spots offshore we have come across but have been productive blind casting to in the past (basically some offshore rips). I also fish spots you can fish from shore but from a different angle or parts of the rip you cannot reach fly casting. For me, it’s always been just blind luck finding them up top and active. Well, not blind luck. We are fishing rips, or we see birds working baitfish, etc. and go check it out.
Could have been us. Both Saturday and Sunday we launched in 10 and fished both 9 and 10 both days. On the Kitsap and Seattle side. There are a couple other Whalers that look like mine out there though. Including a board member who has the same boat but the 19 ft version.
Edit: Fished a short session this morning due to other obligations. 1-1. Cookie cutter 3-4 lbr.
It looked a bit windy and rough when I went to launch at first light. I watched and considered not launching, but I went out. It wasn’t too bad on the water, the overcast was promising, and the rain stayed just north of me while the wind laid down.
It was nice to filet on solid ground at home instead of a pitching boat this time.

Went 1 for 3 this evening on my local beach. Got a 5lb hatchery hen.
