Puget Sound

Sunrise on the canal this morning, from the cabin stepsView attachment 8285

So, this place is a friend's cabin that I have access to most weekdays. Today I fished the canal, starting right out front of the property, during the long slack this morning. A few small schools of chum fry moved thru, and a couple searuns showed, but ignored my flies. I then checked out every accessible beach from Belfair SP around to north of Lilliwaup for the next 6 hours and found no sign of fry or any fish. Returned to the cabin to find at least two fish feeding right out front again. Hooked and lost the smaller one on one of the flies I tied for the March Madness swap (the Tsunami Warning.) A bigger fish was slashing around and - oddly - sticking its head out of the water a couple times. ??!
It hit at least 6 different flies I threw at it, 2-3 times each, but never ate one.
I swear it must have known I was there. Veeeeerry strange day!

Maybe sipping euphausiids or amphipods if it was sticking its head out of the water?
Sounds like a fun day regardless. This can be an incredibly tough time of year at times.

Forgot to post the obligatory walking-back-to-the-car beach pic for @Stonedfish
This was all from <100 feet of shoreline, but at least the last thing I found was a big plastic bag to put it all in :cautious:

Thanks for your efforts.
It is amazing how much litter there can be on the canal considering how little public access there is compared to its size.

Headed out looking for chum fry today. Hit 5 beaches including one I have not fished before and ended up with 5 takes and 4 fish to hand over 6 hours. Never found the chum fry. There are fish around but they are not abundant (where I have been fishing anyway) and a bit finicky still. Should get better over the next month I imagine….

The two biggest of the day:

New beach was promising (small) but as I walked up on it, the first thing that jumped out was the rocks and oyster shells. It kicked out a single fish today but I’ll be going back.

If PNWFF ever does t-shirts, one should be of @Stonedfish trash filled basket with something like: @Stonedfish says: do your part!

Nice fish. Gotta love finding a new beach with some potential

Good looking fish. Fry should around more so very soon.
I had a bunch of family stuff and errands to do this past weekend, so no fishing for me.
I did throw my gear in the rig and was hoping to get in a few hours before heading back north.
Never happened but I did check out a beach I had never fished before but hoped to check out.
When I pulled up, I noticed a sign mentioning video surveillance but nothing about no parking or trespassing. There was an older gal down on the beach with her dog who just kept staring at me while I sat in my rig checking out the water.
She eventually shuffled up the road towards me. I smiled at her as she walked by. If expressions could speak, I received a “f*uck off and die” in return for my smile, lol.
The beach didn’t really look that great once I walked down to check it out.

Did you have blue nitrile on? Maybe that was the problem?

@jasmillo
Don't be breaking any rods here soon...... ;)
SF

They’ve had one of my rods since October (6 weight Maverick) with no eta to get it back. I also have a 7 weight One that needs to go in as well. Wanted that for my July AK trip but not looking promising.

I’m tough on rods, I get it. I could be more gentle probably but all the rods I have broken have been fighting fish.

Is what it is. Just bought a Scott Centric which will serve me well but I will say I love fast action Sage rods for coho due to wind and heavy clousers and stuff like big Dali llamas.
