Puget Sound

Probably my best day of the season so far. 2/5 in a little under 2 hours of fishing. Hooked two fish within 30 minutes and they both popped off at the beach while I was trying to land them. Had a pretty large fish, Im guessing 6lb + take it 10’ in front of me and it give me a few tail slaps before spitting the hook. Wind looks pretty gnarly tomorrow, I think I might give it a break.

It was very slow for me in the downrigger fleet today, I would say it makes me wish I drove up to a beach but the wind makes me say otherwise.

Speaking of boats, how have @Kfish and @jasmillo done? Any fly casting for coho from the Candlefish?

Not much time fly casting from the boat as of late. Mostly gear from the boat when we have been out and fly from the beach. 9 from the beach has been tough. Rewarding quality wise but not so much on the quantity side of things. I’ve probably had my worst 9 season numbers wise since I started fly fishing for coho but also caught PB fish on the fly off the beach in 9. Odd season for sure. Kind of happy the regs will force me to the boat and points south from the beach starting this week. Still some coho to be caught on the fly.

Hit the beach for a short window this morning in the drizzle, it was pretty nice to get rained on and just feel some moisture. 0/2 on cutties plus a couple missed grabs on this pattern I tied up last night, just a bunch of stacked synthetics but looked sweet in the water. Some fall colors starting to show along the20250929_080913.jpg20250929_075227.jpg shoreline.

A few pics from the past few weeks. This weather showed up too late. We needed this about two weeks ago.
Man I wish we still had October in MA 9, because there are a lot more fish to come.

Anyone hear any recent reports from Golden Gardens? Thinking about dragging my downrigger‘s out there tomorrow morning…

Went to see if the cutthroat were around at a beach I’ve fished the past few years this afternoon. Brought 3 to hand and lost probably 4-5 more. The last fish was a chunky 15”. I always appreciate how beautiful these fish are, especially when they get into their fall colors.

I’ve been finding a lot of healthy fish in the 14 to 17” range at area 10 beaches lately. They seem to be well fed and feisty.

Haven’t been out in two weeks due to some circumstances and was bored shitless so I headed south to look for cutts.
I ended up hooking up seven cutts, but only two made it in the net.

There were a lot of these jumping and finning around. The finners were biting and the jumpers weren’t. I had a lot of follows and refusals but ended up hooking four but only landed one. Maybe a smaller fly may have worked better.
3 for 11 in total for the day. Not very good. 😂😂😂

Went scouting for a different species this afternoon but only found staging coho in fishable numbers. I’m usually not in the business of chasing stagers but I was there so gave it a go for 1.5-2 hours. Hooked a couple, landed one.

I didn’t even realize it was possible anymore to catch fish with anything but a loop knot. I mean, unless yer just yankin’ our chains.
