Puget Sound

Fished this morning with @jasmillo on my boat, hit a few spots. Strange how one place the water was crystal clear and clean and another is murky and full of junk.
Got a few in the boat and lost a couple more. It was nice to get some solar warmth but the sunlight also put fish down as well IMO.

Chilly morning for sure! Two puffy jackets, a long sleeve t-shirt, a fleece, gloves, two pairs of socks, a balaclava, PNWFF beanie and it was still chilly running spot to spot, especially at dawn.

Found some fish though. Lou had the hot hand today. I had the hot ears…steaming, even in the sub freezing morning temps. Dealing with tangles in a ratty old OBS that just had to go. Fish in the net though…beats work. Only a couple to hand for me today.

I fished earlier this week, drove around and saw all kinds of conditions, including iced over water! Fishing for me was OK, but these are always enjoyable trips. A few pics: The first ones are from my hotel morning, evening, and the next morning. The last one is late in the day on Wednesday.

On the SRC grind today with @Kfish. I say grind because the fishing has been tough the last few weeks. We’ve found them but not in numbers most times out. Today started off similar to other recent outings. Calm, clear and very cold. There was also a dismal tide exchange so not ideal conditions. Hit a beach early that’s been very productive in the past but only connected with a handful of fish between us so made the call to try something new. Conditions were glassy so decided to make a long, cold run to a spot I’ve had marked on OnX for a long time but never fished. Armed with some fresh intel from a fishing buddy, we headed that direction and found solid fishing. Not lights out but a good morning for January. Once the sun came out and the fingertips thawed, it even ended up being a very pleasant day.

Various shrimp patterns were the hot flies today. We were very happy with the amount of sippers we got to take them. Never had to fish the small stuff.

Hoping the fishing are warming up, this morning outing seems to point that way. Pretty good for a cold sunny January day, the confidence fly remains the pink shrimp although the pink ostrich worm did great too.

Listen; when my wife decides to get up at 4:45 am in January, and run 10 miles in an open cockpit boat in 25 degree weather to take pics of my 15 inch SRC, you’ll get quality pics. Until then, you’ll get my iPhone shots for these reports and like it! This is not about quality my friend, it’s about documentation. 20 years from now I want to know where the fishing was hot on a sunny, cold, shitty tide day in January!

BTW…anyone have any used ski goggles for sale? I’ve lived in MT, CO, ID and New England and this is the first I remember thinking, damn my eye brows are cold. The hats, balaclava and sunglasses covered almost everything except my bushy beauties which gave me a 15 minute brain freeze. Like I was shotgunning a slushy from 7-Elleven… :).

I will look in my old boot bag to see if I have any. All my ski stuff is going to Goodwill.

Do you sometimes ski around Vancouver? I have ski goggles for you. They are OTG goggles (Over the glasses). Stop in Burnaby and take them? My late Christmas present.

Fun day today.
29° when I started at 8:30 and 35° when I called it a day at 1:00. Had rain, snow, sun and wind. I love fishing when it is snowing.
Not fast fishing but enough action to keep things interesting. Nothing big to hand but the fish are starting to take on some nice hues color wise as they move towards spawning. Word is some fry are around from summer chums.
I saw maybe six risers today. My baitfish and worm patterns were throughly rejected. The only pattern that worked for me was a orangish bunny shrimp I tied up last night.
Time to repair my net. It has multiple holes from netting crabs while salmon fishing last summer. 😂

IMG_0716.jpegIMG_0720.jpegIMG_0726.jpegIMG_0723.jpegTook my boat out today, we landed a fair number of fish between @jasmillo and but some spots was disappointing compared to last year around this time, should be getting good soon though I hope.

Got mix of cutts and rezzies, also had a good amount of snow coming down for a period of time.

Landed is a strong word! Hooked might be more accurate, at least on my part. Lost a couple in the netting process. Lost one to a piss poor knot on a freshly tied on fly. This guy actually made it to the net. Hooked fish on three different patterns: shrimp, fry and a simple olive bugger.

Another cold one out on the salt today. It took @Kfish and I multiple launches and lots of shoreline searched to finally find some stacked up SRC. 4-5 hookups off a single point and then double digit hook ups in another spot after spotting a few risers. All solid, chunky fish. Caught fish on shrimp and simple olive bugger patterns. Broke off a fish on a fry pattern. Clean slice actually. I saw the take in shallow clear water and watched/felt him head shake and pop. My guess is he ran my 8 lb flouro against a sharp oyster shell. Some beautiful snow covered mountain scenery as well…. until the clouds rolled in and the showers started.
