Proof Ball

No way you caught a 44” Atlantic Salmon.
Proof ball or it didn’t happen! πŸ˜‰

That's an Oregon 42"...
😁

are those bright enough?

I'm torn. On one hand I appreciate the idea that people that want to measure their fish now have a faster way to do so. I also like the citizen science aspect of it. I think some of the competition aspects could be cool. We usually do a little fish tourney every summer with our lake family, this could be a cool, safer way to do it.

a. Im not a fan of the aesethics of having the orange ball in my pictures (though with AI that could be removed)
b. I appreciate a good fish story. When friends are so jazzed about their fish and they know that it's an 18" fish ... why crush their feelings that it's somehow inferior. It's much better just to whoop it up and high five.

But just like everything some people like fast action fly rods some people like bamboo ... its usually good to have options.

Here is what im wondering:

I used an app once to measure my pupil distance for a pair of glasses utilizing a credit card.

Are you paying 30 dollars for a small foam or whatever it's made of ball where any thing of the same size would work? πŸ€”
I just used that app to order Smith prescription sunglasses…app was free, and I was somewhat amazed at the process…

Yes, yes you are. They claim the app is discriminating enough to spot the difference. But they also claim it won't confuse an orange thingamabobber (which is much smaller) for their "proof ball" and won't inflate the size of the fish due to the mistake.

I tried one with the app. First 42" cutthroat I ever caught on the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie was quickly followed by several more in that range.

ADDITION: I suppose if we have to trust that someone isn't gaming the AI in the app, then we should really just trust the person and save $30. The app is nice, though, in that it gives you water temperature, gauge info, etc, based on your gps location for free. No purchase required.
Damn…I’ve never caught one over 30” in the Middle Fork…
