Heavy cover is where the big boys hang out! 2/0 poppers or gurglers using 12 or 15 # Maxima and an 8wt.
If that's dirtbag gear I'm in!

Not even dirtbag. The gurgler is a topwater of distinction!

more of a chubby than a popper but it was on fluro so it would chug along.
Fishing wasn’t hot by any means and I missed most of the bigger bass due to the small hook.

Over all super fun way to spend the evening

I'm a huge fan of bluegill on poppers. Tons of fun on a light rod.

I use the triangle bug popper pattern because it seems to get hooked deep a lot less often. Bigger gills seem to be able to inhale those mini poppers more often than I'd like.

I just reread this Tom…..what are you, crazy?? That big bag of foam shapes cost a couple of bucks…..three pieces at a fly shop would be double that! I’ll sell you some….

Hell yes! I was fishing a small lake in Minnesota years ago that didn't have a boat launch so it wasn't fished much but was perfect for a float tube. I was catching wide bodied bluegills and deep bodied crappies but they were so big that they were kicking my ass on a 4wt once they got into the weeds. I had my 9' 8wt steelhead rod in the truck so I took it out and using 10# Maxima quickly leveled the playing field.

Fishing in heavy cover isn't dirtbag-its a skill set.
