Poor mans retirement. Panama?

They move fast, and are aggressive, so you really don't want to see one...just my view on that.

Not at all, and I was looking. The locals who lived there told us to keep an eye out for snakes, serious ones were known to be in the area. I appreciated the warning, but it was hard not be somewhat anxious in an unfamiliar environment like the jungle.
I can imagine. 26 species of venomous snakes in Panama

I have seen some poisonous snakes. The one type of guided hike I had done a few times over multiple visits to Costa Rica and my one trip to Panama is night hikes. Those guides see things the average person would not. We have seen venomous snakes on those.

Taken with from a safe distance with a guide with a good light :).

When we hike on our own, we are super cautious. Headed to the place we saw the little fer-de-lance soon (Corcovado). We day hiked that trail ourselves earlier in the day. He also used a black light to shows us a bunch of these along the trail too.

Had a spider of the size of my fist, carnivorous bastards that ambush birds by dropping onto them from branches, land on my chest from the overhead rafters during a post surf hammock nap on a porch at Matapalo in CR...talk about losing my shit...don't like bugs or snakes, tropics not the place to be.

Scorpions bother me more than snakes. on one of my Panama trips, I was walking around in bare feet after dark. I happened to flip on my flashlight and pointed it down. Untold numbers of large black scorpions scurrying around. I made a manly sound (ooofuckshiteeeeeek) and did a cool series of dance moves in an effort not to touch the ground until I made it to relative safety. Still haunts me - the sheer number of them. They seemed to be hungering for my feet. Nope. No thanks.

I'm seriously thinking of retiring outside of the US. I have friends that have done so in New Zealand, the Philippines and would consider Mexico and Belize or somewhere like Amsterdam. I need to do my research but with all of my medical issues some places aren't realistic. New Zealand for example. Opinions are encouraged.. tell me what you know!

I found this video interesting

Obviously one of the considerations is Medical care including costs, availability, access, quality of care.

But also do not overlook the geopolitical environment and/or US tax ramifications either. I have a couple of friends that visit the US at least once a year for medical coverage. Not sure why... Also make sure Social Security benefits can be made, depending on specific requirements.

What a twisted web is weaved around those too...
