NFR Passing Cars Correctly with Space

This rant has been brewing for 6 years…

Seattle drivers are the biggest assholes that I have ever encountered on the road.

My driving experience is limited to Australia and the USA, so I have no doubt that there are far worse places. However, Seattle is noticeably worse than anywhere else I have been. Below is my asshole ranking, of the cities that I have spent the most time driving in.
  • 10 Seattle
  • 7 LA
  • 6 San Francisco
  • 3 Sydney
  • 2 Melbourne
  • 2 Tampa
  • 1 Adelaide
The thing that really gets me fired up is when people speed up, to stop you from merging. I almost never encountered that, in my home town. Over here, it’s like a 50-50 thing.
Drive as shitty of a car as mine and that Landrover Discovery will eventually let you in. Nothing to lose on this side 🤣

You are supposed to do the zipper effect, it will move more cars that way. Unfortunately, no one knows how to properly do it so that is what happens.
Zipperheads forgot to tuck their brains back in before zipping up…
Ya see the signs and know there’s a merge…ramming up to the blockage is not the best option…get over sooner and it will go more smoothly.
I have no sympathy for zipperheads that can’t get over at the “front of the line”.
😉

Plenty of it in north Idaho as well.
Add Cleveland X10, Detroit X20, but I do love NY, go when it's not your turn and you simply get hit or run over. Period. (y) (y)(y)

Btw Europe/UK figured it out a long time ago (Italy would be an exception)...will never happen here, we don't think that way and are culturally not capable. Regardless, we do live in the best country on earth - love it or leave...

I believe it was I90 , when I first saw this , it was unbelievable . I'll bet it was miles for a truck to pass another . IT looked like traffic was backed up for miles .

Same in Montana. Horrible big rigs with zero courtesy.

Actually this is incorrect. It doesn't work here because people think like this, but if all the cars move to the point where the lane ends, and the people in the through lane allow them to zipper in an orderly way, the road can carry more cars and there is less delay for EVERYONE. It won't work until people 1. Move all the way forward to merge. 2. People allow them to merge. Probably never going to happen in Oregon or Washington.

I made pretty good time on I 90 in South Dakota where the speed limit is 80, but many go faster.
That stretch of interstate between Dallas and Amarillo at 1:00 am. I had a '76' Ford van with a 460 in it and couldn't keep up with those truckers. My poor van topped out at 100 mph...

Does water flow more smoothly at a blockage?
I’ll let ya chew on that one for a while. 😉

One a side note…
Does traffic flow more smoothly in “stop n go” traffic or if ya allowed the “one car length per 10 mph rule”…??

It you are in the “stop n go” crowd…ya know…the change lane/speed up/put your brakes on…then you are part of the problem and share the same “mental issues” as the zipperheads. 😉

I have never seen where on-ramps are designed to allow cars to merge into the left/inside lane except Washington. Carpool lane on outside/right lane. To get to a on-ramp one has to go through the carpool lane. Makes no sense at all.

Outside Boston is a scary place to drive. Three lane highway in one direction driving four abreast. Best way to change lanes is look left and turn right. Otherwise they will cut you off. Turn signals guarantee others cutting you off. Can't find a parking spot downtown near the place you want? Just park the car next to the parked cars and leave it there.

Some of the most bizarre drivers are in Denver......high speed limits, real “high” drivers, helmets optional for motorcyclists that weave in between cars and guaranteed 4-5 cars will run every red light! But the most amazing things are you hardly see anybody pulled over and no wrecks?? Are they too high and just miss each other??

You are correct.

Agreed. Dallas area drives the fastest I've seen or been a part of.

Amen.
Now I'm going to go do my 36 miles highway commute and stare at a long line of cars stuck behind someone that has a mile of clear road ahead of them doing pace with a single car beside him to the right. Every damn time.

You ride in the left lane you ride with Hitler.. Unless you're passing of course. But we're not talking about that.

Yet another source of epic frustration for me. I love the lane police that block both lanes. Those people should be publicly hung or shot and their cars moved to the side. They have all the righteous indignation but none of the knowledge of how to actually drive and limit congestion. On the bike they get a mirror kicked. Extra points if it breaks.

We have no helmet laws in Ohio, yet every year 3/4 MC fatalities are unhelmeted.

That one I have some experience with. Water flows more efficiently through bigger pipe. Period. The more big pipe you have the less friction. The more small pipe, the more friction. Changing lanes early is like cutting off a section of the bigger pipe and replacing it with smaller pipe. Doesn't work to anyones advantage.

Does water flow more easily thru curvy sections or straight?
Getting over early and keeping a nice distance in a straight line allows for an easy flow.
Nature rule Daniel-san…even in pipes. 😉
