Pass lake algae

I've found that once they get over 22" they start to develop a "hook jaw". I can usually tell right off by the way they fight. A steady, steady pull down.....Targeting the Brown Trout (over the nice Rainbow) in this lake is an interesting discussion/topic for me. In the past I have disclosed the effectiveness of "gurglers", that can be made to imitate the fathead minnows, "spritzing" on the surface. I also believe that the abundance of Crawfish in this lake must account for much of the Brown Trout diet. For now, I will keep those tactics off the internet.

Before they redid the parking lot, the otters would come under the road via the pipe just by the launch. I sat there and watched as no less than 6 came out of the pipe and went on there way....not a care in the world. I see them every time I am on the lake, but they have never bothered me or anyone else I know of. The fishing never seems to suffer from them being around.

Here’s my report from yesterday, pretty slow. I fished from first light til noon and got 4 rainbows, didn’t see any browns.

Lake was very calm glass like, while it made it nice for the bamboo rod I prefer some chop and rain. I think I usually do better on rainy breezy days there.

Pass lake minnow worked great.

@Wanative and I fished Pass on Friday. Fun day on the water. Thanks for the invite Fred!
Not super hot action but we got into some fish. All bows, the browns didn’t want to play.
Traffic getting home back south was a cluster around the Tulalip outlet mall and again around Alderwood.
Black Friday shopping is highly overrated compared to Black Friday fishing.

Nice fatties. Thx for the report and pics.
Did you get a stomach sample?

No, we fished streamers all day so we weren’t too concerned with trying to match any bug hatches, so no throat pumps samples.
We did see folks using indicators catching fish but I’m unsure if they were fishing chironomids or balanced leech type patterns.

Didn't know you came up north.

My bad, I meant to say Powerbait. My girlfriend wanted to catch trout in San Diego. After a deep sigh I agreed. Lake Jennings, six pound test mono, a weight and yes..yes Powerbait. We had fun getting a few stockers, and she actually ate them with her mother (not me) nice day on a nice lake....( I have gotten some trophy Bass at Jennings, they eat those stocked trout)..but it was a typical day of catching "put in take" trout on Powerbait at a local lake.. far far different than fishing Pass.

Powerbait ???
You need to see a priest ASAP and request reconciliation (confession).
Shoot, if you fished Powerbait more than one time you're looking at a full exorcism.
Hah - just kidding

Just that one time. I remembered using Velvet cheese, canned corn and salmon eggs with my grandfather in the midwest, and thought what the heck. To be honest, I thought seriously of pinning one of those stocked trout on my Bass rod....Pretty much a sure bet for a Largemouth Bass over ten pounds. But I always follow the rules.

The lakes in Southern California are stocked with "Florida Bass" that are different from "Northern Bass". In So Cal they call (put and take) trout "vitamin T". At around six pounds the Bass start to eat the vitamin T. That is why they get so massive. One lake, (Lake Cuyamaca) they stock "quarter pounder trout". The Bass get huge fast, and you are required to keep every Bass landed!!! If caught releasing a Bass you will be barred from ever fishing that lake again!! Believe me , I have seen some impressive "stringers" of trophy Bass from that lake.

I'll add that there is a huge market for "swimbaits" that look exactly like the stock trout. They are pricey and it is if you are literally throwing a 12 inch dead trout. Huge splash. But ...after so many 10 pounders, guys want to hook into the 15 pound range and devote their efforts to throwing these things. They chase the stocking trucks and "match the hatch" with a $50 plastic trout. I like fishing at Pass.

Half the pleasure, if not more, is in the hunt: tying your own flies; observing the surroundings; exploring the world with your flies blind, under the surface.
