Yeah that’s what I thought. Yes both were awesome. John guided us that day. We returned and left our cooler behind. My son and I went and had lunch on the back deck beach view at the Pelican. Awesome sunny day, good food and an awesome IPA. Came back a hour or so later and they had all the fish fillet and crab cooked and it was all packed so nicely with plenty of ice in the cooler. Hefty tip was given. Some good eats were had in the days to follow. 😉

I don't know about anything further up north, not sure about dories launching up north. Cannon Beach if I'm correct is about an 1 1/2 hrs north depending if you get stuck behind a motor home😁

Which kind of mackerel? Pacific, the green ones with stripes? Or jack mackerel which are a yellowish color, no stripes, and reputedly delicious?

Not sure I took a quick look at it and asked the guide it was worth keeping and he said no. I didn't see stripes. And it was pretty good sized and put up a hell of a fight on a 8 wght. From your description it was a jack mackerel. My brother in law landed one also but it was smaller and I didn't get to see it as I was fighting mine.

Lance is correct - Jack and John no longer run guided dory trips. Jack recommends and sends his former clients to either Rob Perkin or Marty Wisehart (Sea Bliss) for fly fishing dory trips.

Make sure to take a form of seasickness measures as I have taken quite a few of my family members out and have been surprised the numbers of people getting green out there. You will have a great time with Rob as he will get you dialed in.

@Evan B grilled a couple of those and was raving about how good they are. Apparently they are actually in the jack family and sounds like they are similar to yellowtail (hamachi).
 
Lesson learned and thanks for letting me know they are good table far. When I first saw it the fish has a look kind of like a queen fish so I was surprised when he said I was a mackerel. The fun part was it took a surface fly and definitely a fun fish on a 8 wght.
 
PC story...good surfing and fishing buddy Gaz (Gary Gregg) and Seano would paddle retrofitted (mounted milk crates, rod rod and net bungies) beater longboard surfboards the mile out to the Rock and jig for rockfish, usually get their limit. A few times they paddled back with salmon hanging out of the milk crates.
Brain cancer and a motorcycle accident respectively cutting them down way too early.

Legitimately one of the best fish we have out here. They're not at all a mackerel in anything but name. Like you say, they're a jack more closely related to yellowtail.
