SFR Old Trails Fire Update

Sorta fishing-related
Truly horrid news, we can’t imagine the situation now for you. We made a donation thru KIRO to support local needs and hope that can help you and your community.

Dave
Thanks Dave, that's very generous and thoughtful of you as many had to leave with little or nothing. I only hope that everyone had decent insurance coverage so they can start to rebuild their lives.

x2...a critical reminder to check on your house fire insurance.
Fire insurance rates have been going up quickly as insurance companies move to geographic area risk algorithms vs individual house location, with some of the largest insurers moving to pull out of the fire insurance business in high risk areas.
Our oldest son was about to make an offer on a bay area house last week when he found out it's hilly location was deemed high risk due to adjacent treed terrain, so fire insurance was quoted at 10K a year.
One of the projected outcomes of the building mega El Nino is 2027 being the warmest year on record globally with yet another drought year throughout the PNW.

Yeah I can't imagine trying to get fire insurance in California right now. Oregon and Washington have probably already gone up too. Even here in western WA suburbia I worry about wildfire. I smell idiots burning trash in their back yards during burn bans on red flag days all the time.

Our Pemco "Coverage A – Dwelling – Extended Replacement Shield" covers against fire, including wildfires. I would encourage everyone to take a 2nd look at your home insurance to confirm it not only covers a home fire, but also total loss of home from a wildfire.

Also, check if your insurance covers earthquakes. Most home insurance companies in Washington do NOT!
Our Pemco does not so we pay $1100 per year to a company called GeoVera. Rates have gone up a tad, but not much. I think it was $950 when we started 6 years ago so a very reasonable increase in my mind. Better than the increases in most everything else!
Check it!

That's definitely a concern going forward if we rebuild... First, is it going to be insurable and if so at what rate?

I’m so sorry to hear all that you are going through, words just don’t quite seem to do justice. I’m truly wishing you and your family the best in moving through all of this.

Thanks to @Dave Boyle for educating us on how to help financially.. donation on the way.

For those with pets impacted by the fires, if you have TruPanion pet insurance they are offering assistance.

Easily one of the stupidest f*n thing ever is prediction betting for forest fires...this is insane:
"During the LA fire that claimed lives, Polymarket, one of the leading prediction market platforms, while the fire was raging took bets on how how many acres the fires would consume, which locations the flames would reach and when they would be contained."
The fires sweeping through the PNW and the rest of the nation, which so far has consumed over 6 million acres? Being bet on. So Senator Merkley of OR has been calling for the federal government to make it a federal crime to bet on wildfires. Result? Congress went on vacation.
Chance of a fire being deliberately set by a douchebag to bet on it?
It's like someone invented a chemical that kills common sense and it has been introduced into all of our nations water supplies.

SICK Bastards!!!

The in-the-pocket gambling apps are going to destroy a LOT of lives. Mostly the ones that use it, but this takes it to another level.
The fact you can bet on nearly anything with a couple clicks is really scary and does bring a strange, but obvious motivation for things like fires.
Supposedly, a growing number of millennials, and even some Gen-Z, are putting the phones down. I know my oldest, born in 97 has. Much to his mother's frustration when he doesn't text us back for 2 days. 😁 And thank God, he doesn't gamble on the damn thing.

We'll see if they've started soon enough not to be swallowed up. As a guy that has spent 30 years in the cell phone biz it makes me a bit sad. I know I've helped save lives with 911 and all that, but I often think of all the Gen Z kids that got phones (therefore the internet) WAY too soon in life.

Sorry for the drift... Glad they are getting those fires under control. Hope the insurance process goes well!
