NFR. Time to hang 'em.

Don't forget to plant hummingbird friendly winter blooming perennials and shrubs.

Over this-a-way the hummingbirds fled for warmer climes weeks ago. As have the doves, and most of the bluebirds. Nothing but falling yellow leaves and a gazillion chickadees now.

What a great idea! Thanks a lot. I'll pass this on.

Ditto to @Otter , really glad you posted this. I’ve been needing some gardening inspiration beyond just buying whatever catches my eye in the spring.

I have a neighbor that has a feeding system that warms the feeder even when it gets below freezing. Keeps em happy and there year round

We have so many birds at our other feeders now. I go through 40 lbs of black oil sunflower seeds a month. That is in addition to the other ground seed I put out for the other seed eaters.

This evening, the wind is howling and the rain is pouring. The Hummingbirds are landing and gripping onto the plastic perch, with their wings tucked in, riding the feeder (tossing in the wind) like a bucking bronco. Far different from their usual hover feeding. And when they let go.., and zoom off into the heavy winds...well I kind of feel jealous.

When the freezing weather hits I put one feeder under the eave with a ceramic lizard broiler aimed at it. This keeps the nectar from icing up and the hummers sometimes just bask in the warmth. Be careful not to get the nectar too warm. The reptile heater bulb is on Amazon at $13 for a pair.FA8995E1-B841-4888-9C1E-46E78306CBE9.jpegB8D20BF9-C298-4D38-9F01-15336441F74F.jpeg

Where I live (NH) the Ruby Throated bird is the only species. It is a seasonal migration. They usually arrive in early May and depart mid-September. We can't put out seed & suet feeders until 12/1 as bears are still active and will destroy any feeders that they find.View attachment 171471View attachment 171472
Same for here in the Poconos, we have been warned about no feeders lest the bears rampage.
