NFR: The War in Ukraine

I've been wondering a lot about nuclear, and I'm wondering if our current model for how they work (huge plant/facility over thousands of acres) isn't the primary issue that we have faced.

We have nuclear plants in every submarine and battleship now and I am assuming that's safe for the people on board. If we dont need to have a significant physical distance from the generators then potentially we do not need to operate an enormous facility out in BFE. No need for a Hanford if we could have many smaller plants throughout a city.

I love seeing energy become more electricity oriented. Not because of a green agenda and a hatred of oil, but because of the energy independence it offers citizens. Theoretically people can manufacture and store electricity at the individual level. A solar panel and a water tower could be in backyards one day acting as a mechanical battery for smooth electricity generation.

The infrastructure of oil is unobtainable to the individual. Even if it were, the ability to store and transport that energy is severely limited by the weight and volatility of petroleum products.

I remember reading @iveofione (I believe) on the old site talking about his Jackerys. While they arent perfect yet, the ability to carry several days worth of electricity and power in a little box is absolutely mindblowing. What might that look like in 10 years? 50?

That's why I believe in electric cars and such. All power/fuel can be converted to electricity. But I cant make internal combustion happen from solar. Cant turn nuclear power into gasoline.
I don't have time to put together the info, but the latest nuclear power technologies are incredible. They don't take up near the space, and the waste is fractions of a percent of what it used to be. Very promising stuff, but it's such a bad word in the mainstream still. It'll be a huge uphill climb to overpower the disinformation campaigns and just the opinions based on the old tech.

From a non-partisan scientific organization dedicated to real information, and which also acknowledges a role for nuclear in our energy future.

Is new nuke tech safer? It depends

To hell with Facebook. They shut me down from posting on their main forum. I can post but only to friends. So I've been put out to pasture. But I don't really care.. I only talk to my daughter on it anyway.

There’s always that… ”15% ethanol gas” this Summer. It’ll create a speedy vacuum to proliferate the buying of electric cars…planned destruction (obsolescence) of your current auto’s engine. Heck, it’ll even be more costly to the pocket book and to the environment. Win-Wins all around!!! 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️
Ethanol. That additive is good for screwing up small engines. My ex ATV got fucked up with that shit and I ended up getting a new carb for it because it mucked up my Carb.. So the best thing for small engines is ethyl, just as long as it ethanol free. A new carb cost me 700 bucks.

Good point Jim. Time to fill up my small engine gas cans, all 4. Old gas has been my problem to avoid.

I put a full can of seafoam in with my 2 gal gas can for the lawn implements. Avoid club gas, like Fred Meyer fuel, Costco, Safeways etc they are cheap for a reason.

I haven't been on Face****/insta since around 2014, mostly because of whores and my then gf now wife's objections to said whores but I feel it's been nothing but positive.

I learned my lesson on the carb problem. I kept my tank full and that helped to keep the junk out of the carb. I also keep my tank on my truck full. It gets down to 3/4's and I fill it up. The gas in the pickup is a habit I started about 15 years ago. Plus when it's damn near full it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fill it up. This is a lesson I can't teach my wife. It just doesn't seem to stick.

So, it might be the whiskey talking here.

I am very worried about climate change. I think we have a short window of time to act before the permafrost melts and the methane cathrates release and we (or at least most of the species on this planet) are screwed. The solution is a transition away from coal, oil, and gas.

Putin's regime relies on oil and gas exports. As the late John McCain put it, Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country.

Isn't now the time to make the switch to electrification and renewable electrictricu generation?

I've always, until recently, been antinuke. But if building nuclear plants is what it takes to kill two birds with one stone, and say build modern nuke plants.

The two birds here are, of course, getting off the climate change slippery slope and crushing Putin's regime in Russia.

Thoughts?

Normally when I drink I worry less about stuff I can't control. I mean it's a major reason I do it. Besides we could go full electric tomorrow and I doubt the vector of any climate change would be altered one bit because we are past the spectre of the "tipping point" that keeps getting moved around for fear based reactions. Should we pollute less and do things cleaner and explore nuclear seriously, of course we should. I still don't think that involves dropping combustion engines altogether though as Inslee and other purists scavenging for votes would have you believe. And to be clear, I'm not attempting to be confrontational or make light of your analysis or climate change in general. I'm merely stating what I feel is a grounded and moderate opinion that's actually workable without destroying society and putting undue strain on rural America.

Just be like me: offset your Bolt EV with an F250 and a 3mpg boat.

Just say no to ethanol. It's just a vote scavenging thing for Iowa anyway. It does nothing for the environment other than retire good equipment early and make a guy buy more. Is this green?

I don't really have a choice. The only place I have seen E0 to buy was in Idaho. Everything in Oregon is E10 or more

I have a commercial fuelling card for this purpose. Ethanol free 87 is pretty available considering the false green washing and it's prolific nature. Ethanol free 92 is tougher to come by but it's around. I get forty gallons at a time. I'm going to talk to my local fuel company about delivering 55 gallon drums to my residence.

I've wondered for years what drives the "green" for ethanol? Corn farmers just in Iowa? What about all the water it takes to grow all that corn? The energy consumed to create ethanol, if I understand it right, is greater than the energy obtained from that gasket eating sludge generating crap. As long as we still have gasoline burning engines, how about gasoline sans ethanol (which I do purchase for my outboard and lawn mower) while we make our move towards more electrified vehicles.

I'd like to apologize for thread drift. I went off subject twice. I'll do better the next time I get on a subject I know nothing about. Sorry.

For the article happy to "prove" common sense may I present only the hippest news source with pictures and all that. It's where all the cool kids get their news, or at least it was.

Fear not though as the current administration has just decided that we are going to water down our gas to fifteen percent ethanol this summer. Yeah it burns dirty but corn is cool and it nukes motors so we can get on to electric faster and braver for a clean green future....
