New Sage fly rods

I don’t understand why some manufacturers stop producing classics though.
The answer is always sales numbers. As an "insider," I've seen some of the greatest rods go completely ignored because they weren't the fastest, latest tech thing to launch that year. So once it no longer makes sense to have a rod in the lineup due to sales, it has to be replaced with something that will sell. It's unfortunate as that's been the fate of a few of my all time favorites.

I’ll take the bait Evan, what are the most significant rods you’ve seen that went by unnoticed? I’ve culled my collection over 20+ years and am pretty happy, but still watch for a “diamond in the rough”.

Yea...in other words Evan, what's your ebay search algorithms?

Looks like Sage is releasing new fly rods very soon, wonder what it will be?
Fly rods are so good nowadays I don't know how much of an improvement you can make, there's so much out there to suit everyone.

BTW Sage X is 20% off.

I currently don't fish with any Sage rods but their marketing technique is working and have me interested lol

I just bought an entire quiver of X’s. I think I’m done.

I had the Sage hookup for like 10 years and bought Winston, Burki, St Croix, Loop, Beulah, Scott, Meiser, Echo and more. Never bought one Sage in that time and tried many of them. I borrowed and fished the Sage “Death Star” for a full steelhead season trying to figure out what the hoopla was about and didn’t get it…. I simply do not like their fast action fly rods. I do not understand why people think they are the best and enjoy this fast action style. I have broom stick St Croix for flats fishing and casting in wind and that is all I can handle of that style.

I will never sell my Sage SP or DS2 for trout fishing.
476 DS2... yep

While I don't own any Sage rods (my one high end graphite is an H3 8wt that I really like for windy stuff and big smallie flies), I joke with a buddy that his One's are little hand cannons. Not my cup of tea, but they sure make slinging a shitload of line easy. His Mod is absolute money and his X is pretty freakin' sweet too. I'll personally never own one of those new ones, but I certainly wouldn't fault anyone for getting the "latest and greatest"...as much shit as I talk about newer "fast" rods as all being great for holding up my tomatoes, they do have their place....mostly not in my quiver, but I do have a few rocket launchers.

I liked the video, could watch more factory assembly and manufacturing. I'm down to two Sage rods, an 890-3 RPLX that I've tried to sell on this and the other forum, and a 590-2 Fli (which I love). Tomorrow I'm going bobber fishing with bamboo.

Yeah, I know. That’s why I said slap a new color on it, call it the Radian 2 and charge me an extra $100. Add a little polybullpoopoourethane to the manufacturing process and call it the next best thing. Just give me my Radian back!

“Everything old is new again” again?
I must be out of sync with most. I went glass and medium fast graphite (almost hard to find now) a while back, but in truth I like fast too. I’m very fond of a Radian 590, and I enjoy a 690 Meridian a lot. There’s purpose and room at the table for both.

The new Sage (place model number here), the latest and most advanced fly rod to ever hit the market. This is a must have for the fly fishing enthusiast, from absolute beginner to the most experienced master caster. Try the Sage (place model number here) and you will wonder how you ever got along without it. The Sage (place model number here) delicately delivers the smallest flies at the shortest distance of any rod, but is also capable of bombing your favorite streamer to the far side of the largest streams. Try it today, there will be no going back.

cheers
I still like my 1986 RPL 5wt. It’s a better rod than I am a fisherman.

It kinda sounds like they just made a slower action rod?

That's awesome! I love marketing....it makes me laugh.

that also sounds like the Mod (fantastic rod, btw).

What was the catch phrase when they came out with the Circa? something along the lines of "reinventing slow" or something like that.

The Gig Harbor Fly Shop is having a R8 casting party on Friday, April 8th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Skansie Park.

They "will have snacks, drinks, and lots of R8s available for casting."

I’m a Sage whore and not ashamed to admit it. But, more specifically, I’m a Sage Z-Axis whore and personally I don’t think they have dramitically (if at all) improved upon that blank since it was discontinued. My first high end rod purchase was a Z-Axis 490-4, which replaced a Sage Launch 490-4. The difference between those two rods was night and day and the 4 weight Z is still my favorite rod to fish. Since then I have purchased used single hander Z’s in 590-4, 691-4, and 790-4. I also have two handers in 7136-4 and 8134-4 that don’t get used any more since I quit chasing the elusive steelhead. All my Z-Axis rods are rather enjoyable to cast. I sampled but never cared much for the Sage One series, but when the X series came out I bought an 890-4 for a trip to Kiritimati and thought it an excellent rod for that application. Also in my Sage quiver is a Circa 379-4, a splendid small stream rod, and an XP 691-4 which shares Montana nymphing duty with my 6 weight Z. I go back and forth between the XP and Z, unable to decide which is the clear winner on any given day.
