My mechanic owns a transmission shop that also does general wrenching. According to him, Toyota makes th best CVTs, followed by Honda. They still require regular fluid changes. Others are luck of the draw with Stellantis and Nissan being the worst.

Gonna be tough to stay under $25k for something decent with under 50k miles.

My vote would be to bump your budget up to $28-30k and look at the Honda CRV & Toyota RAV4 Hybrids. The RAV4 hybrids have proven to be pretty damn solid. We own a 2020 CRV AWD, non-hybrid and it's been solid. My friends have a 2017 or 18 RAV4 hybrid AWD that has 140k miles and they haven't had to do a thing. Just oil, tires and brakes.
The CRV is a bit more capable off-road, but if I was looking for a good used hybrid it would be the RAV4 all day.

Good luck!

Looks like a bunch of fun for a Summer rig. The RWD is a non starter for me.
It is for me too - that and electrics aren't widely supported here yet, but there's not a lot of choices for those on a tight budget. So, with a base price of $25K and ability to trick it out a bit when funds improve......

Toyota owns a major share now in Subaru, not sure exactly how much. Subaru hybrid i was told is similar, but not the same as Toyota, a cross sharing of engineering, parts happening.

Wife had a 2018 Rav4 hybrid. Solid vehicle.
Except hit a shallow pot hole on a dirt road, unknowingly pulling the front of a plastic skid plate down. Last time we drove it except on paved road, it cost around 1250 to fix replace because sensors were attached to it.

An independent mechanic I think highly of strongly recommends purchasing extended warranties with any new or used car due to the extreme cost of parts these days paired with labor rates to $200+ an hour.

Color me intrigued about a lifted AWD Prius.
Here's a link to the lift kit. There are some example pictures.

Probably will be looking for something a little bigger though too. This is the one that's going to my kid eventually.
