NFR My squirrel friend.

Non-fishing related
Heck, long ago I had a skunk that would take food from me at my doorstep, in a high rent district in a big city.. I named him John Kerry.. We got along just fine, but I could never fully trust him.

Bumping my old thread here. Over the winter I learned about feeding a squirrel. Leaving food out can initially attract a squirrel, however, I've found that "hand feeding" Douglas is the better option. It keeps the other neighborhood squirrels away. Douglas has come a long way at mastering my attempts to challenge his gymnastic skills. He learns by trial and error (that's the funny part) but he learns quickly. He clearly likes this game, and will ignore peanuts on the ground while waiting impatiently for me to put a peanut just out of his jump range......... He now gets whole peanuts coated in "natural" peanut butter. I use a spoon for this, and soon, Douglas became accustomed to licking the spoon. Last month I got tired of holding the spoon for him, and just handed it over to him. It was cute watching him hold it in two hands licking it clean. A couple of days later he decided to just tuck the spoon under his arm and take it home. He is a likable little rascal.

When I lived on Whidbey, I had a squirrel trained to come into my downstairs man cave that had an outside sliding door. It would come in and jump up on a stool next to my recliner and take a peanut from me. I started by feeding it on the porch outside and slowly placing them closer and closer. The biggest threshold was getting it to actually come in the door. It would take it from my hand at the doorway before it felt comfortable enough to come inside. The whole process took over a couple months, but it was fun. Now, here in Cody, I have two crows (sometimes three) that come regularly to the porch roof outside my upstairs window, if I’m a bit late in the morning with their peanuts, they will sit on the roof and squawk.

It’s never a bad idea to develop allies all over. You just never know when it may come in handy.
