Muncho Lake

Getting on our plane at Pitt Meadows in BC, heading to Fort Nelson

This cool plane was in the hangar

The smoke from wildfires carpeted the Rockies we were flying over for several hundred miles. This was the highest I’ve been in a prop plane with the exception of one C130 flight to Wake Island

Landed in Fort Nelson for transfer to a van for a 2.5 hour ride on the Alaska Highway to Muncho Lake…caribou and black bears along the side of the road were spotted as we headed north

While yesterday was clear, the fog and smoke found us this morning, altering our fly out plan for grayling…heading to a different location for bull trout & lake trout…leaving the 4 wt in the cabin & now bringing a 6 & 7 wt…

To be continued…

Camped along Muncho Lake on my way to the Yukon back in the early 90's - beautiful area. Good luck with your quest!!

Hard to see in this photo, but while approaching to land, a cow moose was crossing the shallows

While they were unloading the clients supplies for the week, we strung up a rod and tied on a small streamer…

There was a small creek entering the lake by the cabin…one of several lake trout…

WOW!!! Thanks for sharing. A lot of great pics, but my favorite was the one of the end of the end of the Rocky Mountain range.

The smoke cleared and the grayling program was back on…I heard about the epic grayling fishing beforehand…
IMG_6805.jpeg

Unloaded the plane and transferred our gear into a small skiff to get around the lake…
IMG_6806.jpeg

There was a small pour over from a bottleneck between two sections of the lake…this was supposed to be a grayling hotspot…but hardly any fish were around. No love on multiple dry fly changes, switched to small leeches and had two on & off, then several follows…a real head scratcher for me, since all of my grayling encounters usually meant the fish would crash anything that floats…

Switched to another spot and picked up several grayling…all decent sized between 15”-18”…this spot had a small creek running into the lake…we repeated this several more times around the lake
IMG_6815.jpeg

My buddy brought his euro rig and took a dozen in the stream…in one deep pool, I threw a small white leech and caught the biggest graying of the trip so far…solid 20”

Amazing topography in that area of the world. The silence is deafening when stopped with the motor off just embracing what your eyes are capturing. Thanks for the ride along.

Today was pike day…brought at least 40 to the net between 30”-36”, and a couple approaching 40”…while eating a shoreline lunch, I hooked a couple on a gurgler, and a few more on the boat throwing a 7wt…best explosive take going. We kept four between 6-8 lbs for fish and chips dinner. The majority was on my 8wt with sinking tip…black and red was the best color combo

I would have taken a few more pics of the bigger fish, but my phone died…apparently I took several videos of my butt while it was in my back pocket

Today was a take it easy and rest the shoulder day, so no fly out. Drove up and hiked to the falls on the Smith River…threw a couple big streamers for the resident bull trout, but no love…downsized flies and caught a dozen small grayling and two small bull trout
