Here are some pics of the new rig to be used for overnighters or short trips. The bed is the big news as it is a full 75" long and very comfortable. The locker holds both food and clothing, a new USB powered pump is coming for the water jug, there is plenty of space for the Jackery and the fridge runs off of the car or the Jackery. New rooftop crossbars hold the pontoon. A fun conversion so far that will deliver about 29 mpg.IMG_20220309_104334228.jpgIMG_20220309_104348370.jpgIMG_20220309_104542626_MP.jpgIMG_20220309_104505771.jpg

Love it! What will you use the pump for with the water jug? To pump water out when you're in there so you don't risk spillage?

Exactly-the ones with the spigot sometimes get bumped and leak or worse yet-broken being in such a small space.

Pretty cool Ive. Is that a Subaru? Or something similar?

A fridge for a 2-3 day trip.
Glamping at its finest.

Ive,

Great build! Thanks for posting the pictures.

I'm in the process for trying to do something very similar in my 2013 CR-V. I'm also just looking for 2 to 3 night maximum setup. What thickness of plywood did you end up using for the base of your bed. It looks like it might be 1/2 inch with some indoor/outdoor carpet on top?

That's it exactly. 1/2 inch birch finished both sides. I have the 75'' length piano hinged in the middle and covered with I/O carpet.

Thanks for the quick reply! A friend had offered some 3/4 inch plywood but that seems a bit much for a 26" wide platform. I'll go with 1/2 inch for version 1!

I realize that many people don't have even rudimentary woodworking skills but am still amazed at how how many build bed platforms out of 3/4'' plywood and 2x4's! Those things have to be heavy as the hubs of hell and strong enough to support an 800# payload.

When I built the bed frame for the Casa I was in the middle of having my right arm strapped to my body for 6 weeks while I healed from a broken shoulder. I used my left arm and what little help my right hand could give me. Heavy wasn't an option. The frame was made out of 1x4 spruce with cross supports at 25'' and 50''. The top was made out of 3 pieces of 3/8'' plywood that had support on all 4 edges-plenty strong once the mattress applied pressure to the entire surface. I used the same 3/8 plywood for the legs and added a rib at 90 degrees to the leg's face making it incredibly stiff. The finished product weighed under 16# and was easy to carry with one hand.

Since then I have added piano hinges to the 3/8'' bed panels for easier access and added some more material when I converted it to a chaise lounge but the weight is still barely 20 pounds. The point being that by pre-stressing and reinforcing plywood you can achieve great strength and low weight. Think Spruce Goose here....
