Maiden Voyage

I bought a pram about a month ago and have been patiently waiting for the lakes here to cool down. After the last couple weeks of “Fall like temps” I decided to test the waters of the local C&R lake. While waiting I had figured out a way to get the boat in and out of my truck without damaging it or myself and I was ready to give it a go. Got the boat in the water without any issues and quickly tossed in the Garmin to check the temp. Surface temperature was 61, definitely fishable. Hit a few of my favorite spots and was able to land three mid sized fish, two pigs and one “Trophy”. All rainbows, all fought hard and swam away strong. I think fall fishing has begun!

It was nice. Some major differences from the inflatables, they both have their pros and cons. I think it will take a few trips to get things organized and figure out what I need to bring and what I don’t need. It will be nice when the water temps get real cold and my legs aren’t dangling in the water.

That, and the ability to stand up (or kneel if it's choppy or crowded) to pee makes having a beer during the day seem like a more viable option. I hate having to kick to shore and drop waders.

Pro tip: get ya a whiffle ball bat and cut the ends off. Pee in the big end while dangling the little end over the side. No more leaning over the edge of the boat. Tie a line through a hole in the big end and you can rinse the bat easily. I call mine “the wizzer”. Saved me more than once. You’re welcome.

Yeah, leaning off the side to pee is actually not a great idea, I agree. I keep a bailer in my little boats which doubles as a pee can--it happens to be a plastic pitcher. If you kneel in the bottom of the boat, you can be pretty discreet with your wiz into the pitcher, which is useful for a lot of these westside lakes with homes all around. I can imagine waving the ol' yellow or red whiffle ball bat around is a good advertisement for the wizzer, though!

One of the many advantages of a sit-on-top kayak is being able to take a leak whilst sitting comfortably .... the scuppers provide a quick route to the lake, followed by a rinse with lake water. No fuss, no muss.

I suppose those logistically challenged by length or cold weather could employ the wiffle bat accessory.

I have a canvas bailing bag in my boat. I can pee in that without standing up (stealth pee) and then just pour and rinse it over the side. Also, sometimes it's nice to be able to bail water out of the boat (but I also have a hand pump for that).
