Looking for an Illustrated Book of Flies

cdnred

Life of the Party
I've been looking for a book illustrating fly fishing flies but haven't been able to locate one. What I'm searching for is a book of illustration or catalog showing various flies with their names attached to help sort out my fly collection. I've come across many fly tying books but that's not what I'm really looking for..

Not a book but has lots of flies on-line, picture and name:

An older (out of print book) that might help (used copies are out there):

Appears you are in Canada - maybe check online shops in your locale...

Maybe post pictures of the hard to identify ones here and let us sleuths go to work?

Most fly catalogs have pages of flies for sale as you describe, many fly websites by tyers or enthusiasts/historians do as well. Trout by Ray Bergman, Gierach’s Good Flies, Dave Hughes’ Trout Flies: the tyers reference all have what you ask for.

Talk with @Mark Yoshida : He has a lot of fly books for sale right now. Maybe he can help you:

I have a book called the Fly patterns of umpqua feather merchants with about a thousand flies shown. Have you seen that? If it needs to be illustrations as opposed to pictures I have a book with a zillion drawings of salmon and steelhead flies. If that is what you are after I can check its title at home.

I would suggest the Fly Pattern Encyclopedia from Federation of Fly Fishers. Great book with hundreds of patterns. I have it in spiral bound and have used it for years. If you are just looking for a "coffee table book" I would suggest Fishbugs by Thomas Ames (great pics)

PS I have no idea why my response is printing in bold. I can't seem to turn it off

I also highly recommend "Flies of the Northwest"...particularly if you're focusing on truly effective PNW patterns, rather than 'art' flies....not that there's anything wrong with 'art' flies, but I have little interest in tying fly patterns for waters and species I'll likely never fish....and if I did I'd likely do so with a guide or at least the flies acquired from a knowledgeable local flyshop.

Flies of the Northwest is still available

The Orvis Fly Tying Guide is similar and probably a little cheaper.

If you’re in Canada and these are flies typically used up there, there is this one guy who is pretty well known by the name of Art Lingren. A couple of others would be - Brian Chan and Phil Rowley. The internet is loaded with resources as well.

My couple hundred books on the subject are being packed as I type this for my move. As another had mentioned, post a photo on here and we all will be glad to help out.

One thing I have found to be useful, is to break the fly down by location and material, to help identify a particular fly…

Hook:
Tip:
Tag:
Tail:
Butt:
Rib:
Body Hackle:
Body:
Hackle/collar/throat:
Wing:
Head:

Not all apply, but some searches can be made by knowing materials, colors, and locations.

I have Noll guide to trout flies I don’t need. Not sure how to get it to you. Seattle, Wa.

Circa 1965.
Is that just a trout fly tying book or does it have a listing of flies..? I did a search and didn't see any pics of the inside pages. I've got a few books on fly tying from Orvis but they only describe how to tie select flies..
