Looking for a new 8wt reel

I have two 8wts and only 1 reel. I'd like to get the second one rigged up with a floater.

Looking at either the Danielson F3W 7ten of the Orvis Hydros IV. I'd love to keep this under $200 (the F3W 7ten is $190 and the hydros new is $289) new is since it's not going to get used a ton and once I decide I'm going to keep an eye out for used.

I think I’m mostly looking to hear if anyone has experience with the Daniellsson as it’s a lot easier to get the hydros in my hands

Get the Danielsson. Orvis is fine, but the Danielsson is better. The 7ten is a perfect 8wt reel. If you don't have to have a disc drag (e.g. salt), the Original 2W is awesome as well.

If you want to play around with either of those, lmk.

edit: you're going to have a tough time finding a used Danielsson on the market. Orvis on the other hand....that should tell you something (plus, even used the Hydros will still be more than the F3W).

I mean, 190 for a good new reel is so cheap that I don’t really need to wait around for used :)

Thanks for the endorsement

Hmm, never heard of Danielson.
Nice looking reel.
Been mulling over buying extra spools for sets ups or whole new rod n reel.

Might have to give one of these a shot myself.

Spools are great, but the only problem is you cant have a second rod rigged for quick change in method or fly. For instance, all the muppets carrying 5 rigged rods in the boats ;)

He used to make reels for Loop and the decided to discontinue that relationship, go his own way and sell direct.

Sweet. Congrats.
I've been staring at the website for the last 24 hours.
Maybe I'll wait for your review lol

So the only difference between f3w and l5w is freshwater vs saltwater?
And if this is the case, there isn't a reason to spend the extra 30 bucks for at least having the saltwater option, right?
Haven't really done any looking into saltwater, bit wouldn't mind having the option.

From what I understand, they’re both sealed (saltwater sage). The L5W just has a bigger drag. I’m not really worried about that since I’ll be using it for oregon bulls and smallmouth, not exactly line peeling species ;)

I sprung for one also. Price was right.
Thanks for the feedback and peer pressure to spend more money on this addiction. Better than smoking crack I guess lol. Wife might disagree maybe lol

Now I guess I need an 8 weight rod.
Thinking echo ion xl. Easy choice of value vs price. But all I own are echos, and kinda itching to try something new.

basically, yes. the L5W is a bit more stout but all of them have the same discs which can be adjusted (directions included), but I've never seen the need). The F3W comes pre-set at level 3 (more than enough for anything in the PNW. L5W is pre-set at level 4 (of 5), while the H5D (and I believe the Control) are pre-set at 5, the highest level. Super stout. I have the H5D for albacore (total overkill, I know).

This is good to know, I actually couldn’t find anywhere where it said what it came set to. Maybe it’s on the Internet but I figured the booklet would say it. Regardless, it is way stout enough for anything I’m using it for (bulls, smallies and hopefully carp).

Here’s the danielsson and the reel it’s replacing. Don’t get me wrong the system 2 can stop a mac truck but the arbor is just so damn small I’ve lost a couple big bulls on it because they ran at me to fast and I couldn’t pick up enough light. Crazy thing is they weigh about the same.

Wow, what a difference in size!

Congrats on the new reel. A friend of mine owns a couple of Danielssons and he is very happy.

It should be on the outside of the box
