Confluence Fly Shop is running a fun low-key contest this month to encourage folks to leave trout alone in the warmest and driest part of the summer and instead, focus on the species that thrive in mudbog bathtub waters. Rules are simple, catch three warmwater species on the fly in one day and you get an entry into a drawing for some prizes. Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, crappie, catfish, carp and whatever else you can dredge out of your local drainage pond.

Because I enjoy silly things like this, I gave it a shot the other morning and found a largemouth (foam popper), crappie (beadhead bugger), and bluegill (micro popper). As you can see below, the 8wt Echo Eight Four was overkill for the bass I caught. But hey, you gotta be prepared... just in case. The crappie and bluegill were much more fun on a 4wt Echo River Glass.

If you don't fish bass/panfish much, this is a great excuse to give trout a break. Don't worry, the rain and 50 degree temps will be back before we know it.
