Before the Winston I mentioned above, I had an Echo SR 4wt, and threw the 235gr Ambush. That was a pretty fun and versatile combination. I still have the line and occasionally try it out on one of the 7wts. I often think i should spool it on a pflueger 1495 mounted on a Fenwick ff857 I have, and just leave them strung and stashed out of site in the truck. It’s a decent combination for quick 30 minute stops. A little heavy for troots but I stop here at LkWa (close by home) occasionally, mostly just to cast for a bit, and sometimes find a SMB or cutthroat. Rumor has it there are a few capr but I can’t confirm. Being somewhat cheap and disposable, it’s reasonable off the beach too, with a good rinse. Back in the day, the 7wt was much more the standard fly rod, and the previous generation didn’t have the saltwater gear available today. I remember some rust in dad’s arsenal of salmon gear. Shrug it off and don’t worry about it.
I often remember the phrase: “Pflueger and Fenwick, just like peanut butter and jelly.” They’ve caught many tons of fish together. Part of me thinks hard about deliberately going low tech.
But, I digress and have gone “off the reservation”, sorry.
