Late Archery Pope & Young buck

Nice!

The Story as requested.
Several week of scouting and reviewing game cam pics had revealed a couple main traffic lanes. One particular lane stood out with a couple nice 4x4 bucks caught on cam. I had set up and brushed in my ground blind a week before opening day. I would be 25 yards upwind of this trail. Opening day at 06:30 I was in position. I sat all day until about 3p and not a single deer. I said to myself "I am out of here at 4p". The 22° temps and 18 inches of snow were starting to break through my multiple layers. Then at 3:35p movement caught my eye. Through the brush along the trail I could see bits of a deer and a rack. I could tell he was a shooter buck. At 3:40 he was in my open shooting lane. I estimated my shot at 28 yards.
He knew something was off.
He would put his head down and then quickly look up in my direction. He did this twice trying to spot some movement. I has put my sights on the kill zone, steadied my shot and let her fly. The buck leaped back and bolted off. I waited a few minutes and then walked to where the buck had been standing and instantly spotted blood in the snow. I knew my arrow had found it's mark. The blood trail was easy to follow in the snow. It was only 25 yards from point of impact and there he was, down next to a tree. As I approached I could see that this was a very nice buck. He had been the only deer I saw all day. I was thankful and felt blessed. Later review of all the game cam pics, this buck had not been in the area until that day. Or he was very camera shy.

That’s awesome Jim! Based on your description of his behavior when he came in, and the fact you had no pics of him, it’s likely he hadn’t been to your setup yet. They are always a little edgy when they come in for the first time. 3:30-4:20 is the magic time for bucks showing up.

That is a fine buck. Well done.
