Kind of slowing down

I've been traveling the last 4 days.. my wife and I both had Monday- Thursday off so we used Valentines day to do one of our hairbrained road trips.. went to diamond crater state park in AR.
Now in Clinton OK. on our way home.
Find anything? I've done some gold panning and corundum hunting but never diamonds (not yet). So many cool things to do...

I got out yesterday and did a little fishing in a stream about 25 miles from my home in SW Pa. The water was still a bit high and off colored and I didn’t catch anything, but it was a pretty day, in the high 40°s, and nice to be outside.

This is called Wertz’s Red Bridge, that I walked across to get to one part of the stream that I like to fish. It was built in 1867 and Is 220’ long, the longest covered bridge in PA. At one time you could drive cars through it, but in 1959 a car hit and damaged the bridge so today you can only walk through it. It’s listed in the National Registry of Historic Structures.

There is a lot of our country’s history along our streams and rivers. At one time a canal paralleled this stream, just to the left, and out of view of this picture. You can still see a few of the old locks remaining from that canal, but the rest is largely overgrown and invisible today.

Going to cool off here next week, but it has been a nice 2-week "harbinger of spring" break. Maybe the cooler temps will push a few more photogenic birds back or at least convince a few to stop over for a bit.

@Old Man , if you want to meet me at Big Sky this can be you.

No.. it was more of an exploratory visit. We only fug for a couple hours. When we go back we'll be better prepared. It's not as simple as the other types of digging we have done in the past. It's all about moving lots of material..
North of there however are places to dig quartz crystals, much more productive. I want to go back in April to fish lake Ouachita and go crystal mining..

Hey @Old Man, when the weather has you down in the dumps, have a shot of whiskey, jump in your time machine and set the date to 1963 and go back to the Pilchuck River and wrestle one of them big chromers on a mid Feb day, with the sun warming your back. That's what I do.... @Salmo_g was it 1963 or 67?
I was actually fishing the Pilchuck River with a buddy of mine. I saw an Okie drifter just sitting still in the currant. I reached down to see if it was one broke off a line with a sinker attached. And it moved out into the current. Then it mover over to the other side of the river and went upstream. The river was clear and I looked to see what it was attached to. A big fish or a little fish. Never did see anything.

No, it couldn't be me. I can barely walk now. This is one thing I never wanted to take up. With two bad knees and a screwed up back would probably kill me If I tried this.

It kind of sounded like you might be serious about doing some float-tubing though? Is that true?

That used to be me Swim, in the loosest way. Several friends through HS were racers, a couple of the “downhill” stripe. One sold me a pair of 220 Kneisel Red Stars cheap, and way way over my ability. Hard to carve these railroad irons, but on sheet ice (not uncommon in the cascades) I was one of few able to hold an edge. But it was exhilarating to point them down slope and hang on for the ride. That day passed over 30 years back.

Since I'm really fucked up, I've been thinking of just shutting down my fishing at this point in time. I honestly don't even feel like getting out anymore. I think my get up and go, got up without me and left. I half way just thinking of bagging it all.(n)

ehhh, give it a few months. This is a rough time of year for fishing for most of us, either because of closures or weather. A sunny summer afternoon on a creek or lake with a cold beer and you'll be singing a different tune.

This is kind of funny. I never drink much beer at all. I prefer whiskey over beer any day of the week. I only drink beer if it kind of falls in my lap. Like one time I found a half a rack sitting in a river with no body around. So I left and the beer went with me. It was a hot summer day and the cold beer went down nicely.

Jeez, Jim... I never took you for a beer thief. Some angler left it there and planned on drinking it when returning from up or down stream. If it was a hot summer day, they most likely were not happy that the beer disappeared.

Never look a gift beer in the mouth?

Years ago in the mountains of North Georgia, near a little rhododendron and hemlock shaded stream, I parked with nobody around, stashed a couple cans of beer in the crick, and set off to fish. I returned a couple hours later and there was another vehicle and two people, not fishing. We said hi, they headed on and I headed to my stashed beers...which were gone! I ran up to the road and chased after them. "Um, hey, did uh, did you find a couple cold beers in the creek? I put a couple there, they were my only ones and they're gone." The beers were produced with an apology, though it didn't seem all that sincere and frankly seemed a little reluctant, if I recall correctly!
One time, a PBR tallboy floated right to me as I fished the Middle Fork. It was slightly dinged up. That was a legit lost and found beer.

@Old Man Jim, I hope @Josh is right and this is just a seasonal thing. You've said that before but then got over it. I suspect you will again. If you do want to float tube, let us know if you need anything--you had mentioned fins, that why I asked.

I'm sorry to hear that your not doing well OMJ. Hopefully you can get out fishing again! I'm rooting for you!

Had hiked a ways up from the mouth of the Deschutes with a buddy, after steelhead. He tells me to start in the bucket, while he starts in the frog water above. Next thing I know, he's hollering something, opening a river beer that bumped into him. Then he's hollering because he hooked up with a fish. Beer in one hand, rod in the other.

That's a good day!

I’m pretty sure that was my beer Jim, if it was cold and yellow. But that’s ok, I forgot where I stashed it right after I peed in one bottle. Bon Appetite Pal.
My fishing is waning too. But my golf is improving to the mediocre stage, so I expect my debut on the Senior Tour any day between now and death. Boating (something my bride has really taken to) is becoming a mainstay again. Convenient since I grew up and worked on the water years back so it’s one of the few things I’m fairly good at. That’s likely to take up some of our time for the next few years. I do hope to get the garage queen DB out though.
