Kihei second day fishing report

Jim Allen

Steelhead
Well my second day at the beach was a bit better than the first. Again on the water at sun up. I hit a section mentioned br Scudley Do Right. The surf was way better. Notes from the day. Location was much better. Early on I focused on casting when I felt something bump my leg.....it was only after jumping 10ft out of the water I noted that it was a young sea turtle. That turtle scared the shit out of me. I spent another hour or so of casting and scanning the water. Around 0900 I started to make my way back to the condo. (Lunch plans at 11) when I noted flashes of silver in the waves. It was a good size school of goat fish. None of which wanted anything to do with my fly. So my second day on the water provided more excitement but no fish to hand.

This brings back memories of staying in Kihei, 10 years ago, parents 50th wedding anniversary. They rented a beach house for three weeks. We stayed for about 10 days with them. The morning routine, wake up, make coffee, drink coffee on the deck and watch the whales….

Then drink beer, eat poke and watch the sunset…tough regimen…

Fish ID is critical. Last time I waded out to some tails, but when I got closer the fins were dark and triangular. Once the panic subsided I realized they were a ray. Another day I was casting to an active bone at first light, only to see ten minutes later that it was a puffer fish.
