A second big earthquake of ~8.7 magnitude hit off the coast of Kamchatka hit today (Tues July 29). Possible tsunami on US west coast late tonight.

yikes!

I am SO GLAD the morning after reports so far don't mention loss of life and massive property damage! It sounds like the wave height and surge were lower than predicted but the US and international early warning system and emergency response protocols appeared to have been initiated and followed.

Reports that I can find indicate local authorities had closed areas of potential danger, local residents and tourists, heeded evacuation notices, local businesses (i.e. hotels...) moved paying guests (and possibly helped others stranded and seeking safe shelter) to their upper floors. Law enforcement is still keeping curious onlookers out of low areas because of potential aftershock waves. And the SHAred RESources (SHARES) High Frequency (HF) network had normal training.
BRAVO ZULU!

Plenty of people in Manzanita OR are acting like nothing is happening. The cop who was parked there for a little while last night was not too concerned nor was he doing any type of crowd control. He said most king tides were more concerning, in his opinion.

I plan to stay at a little higher elevation with the fam until the advisory is lifted just to be on the safe side.

We were staying in Cannon Beach last night. Needless to say, the Tsunami advisory got our attention. We checked various broadcast and Internet news sources and decided to head inland a few miles to wait it out for a couple of hours.

While we were waiting it out, we kept looking for real-time updates. We all thought it odd that there wasn't much in the way of updates on what was happening as the tsunami arrived. No real details, but plenty of video interviews with people on beaches and some general guidance from officials. Tsunami.gov was pretty useless. I'm sure there's plenty of data, but navigating it was not intuitive and there weren't any prominent alerts.

I'm glad the impact to the west coast was minor, but I feel there would have been big problems in emergency response if it turned out to be big. Not much actionable information, and people were just carrying on as usual.

Glad you guys move inland. Folks need to take these more seriously, like any fire drill. You don't know until you know, and by then, it's too late. Heed the warnings, if it's a dud, feel thankful, if it's the real thing, you're out of the way.

Stay safe!!

Fortunately it was not a damaging tsunami in HI...several of my friends moved their boats out of the harbor/marinas to wait it out offshore...but there was a run on gas, rice and toilet paper...and probably spam…it's Hawaii brah...

Y, probably (from Tsunami.gov) when Amchitka (1.8ft), Adak (2.7ft), and Kushiro Japan (1.1ft), reported that it lessened the urgency for the West Coast but news reports from Hawaii last night mentioned a lot of activity. Interestingly CONUS; Crescent City (4.0ft) Arena Cove (3.0ft), Port San Luis (2.7ft) and Port Orford OR (1.4ft), La Push?? (1.3ft), Port Angeles (1.2ft) were some of the highest readings.

You never know when these BIG SUNAMIS are gonna hit!! You never know!!! There could just be. Sunami at any time!!!! Known to suddenly occurr. You get these guys these days trying to tell you when. x2..kind of like how few decades back, to keep the crowds down during an epic fall wave run, we began spreading the rumor that a BIG white shark had been prowling around a fave hike in surf spot, "so we're staying away from it", and did that rumor spread, while we continued to surf it with just a few friends.

I was looking for a t-shirt at the tourist shops that says “I SURVIVED THE WEST COAST TSUNAMI! 2025” and has a picture from the evacuation signs of the little guy running up a hill. Sadly, I could find none.

I mean it was a tsunami. It just wasn’t very big.

Crescent City on the California side of the Oregon/CA border was probably hit the hardest. The way the harbor is configured makes it particularly vulnerable (it was completely destroyed in 2011).

Depoe Bay was hit pretty hard in 2011, too!
