Just the tip

I broke the very tip top off my Scott centric and rather then hassle with sending in for warranty and being down a favorite rod, can I just glue a new eyelet on it and keep fishing or does that technically void warranty? If so any recommendations on a decent replacement?

Yes a new tip top can be glued on, as far as warranty, just say you we're on remote fly in trip and put a new tip top to continue fishing!

Somebody (I think Flex Coat) makes some special thermal glue for tip tops that can be heated up to remove. It might just be essentially re branded hot glue sticks but it’s not expensive and was recommended by rod builders so I went with that.

I used this stuff on the first rod I built. First time I went fishing in the summer here in eastern Wa the tip came off. Now I use regular epoxy to attach the tips.

First I have heard of this. I have not had this issue on the rod I repaired. I also haven’t fished with it in y’all’s brutal summer heat. Multiple experienced rod builders recommended it so that’s what I did. If I were concerned about voiding warranty it might be nice to keep it removable. It would also be annoying to have the repaired thing come flying off. As long as the line is strung, I guess you’d at least get it back!

For some reason I read what Matt said above and it didn’t resonate with me when it definitely should have. Years ago the tip top of my burkheimer spey came loose and would spin in circles around the blank but without coming off completely. I was told by a fellow from Burkie to just heat the tip with a lighter and reset it. Bingo it worked 6-7 years later it’s still fishin. This was all forgotten until I was in the fly shop today and my brain was triggered by the guys behind the counter as we discussed how I should fix it. Well I got home, held the tiny sliver of broken carbon fiber attached to the tip top. 2-3 seconds with a lighter and the glue bubbled and the tip slipped right off on its own, while still warm I slid it back onto the top section of my rod and quickly aligned the guides. Within 20 seconds my rod tip was repaired with the original tip and glue (there was plenty). I could have just as easily fixed that in the field.

Yes the thermal glue is apparently the way to go and rod manufacturers use the same stuff.

THE MORE YOU KNOW.

These warrantries these days are getting away with stealing my money. I'm owed upwards $3800 from various product returns and WARRANTY CLAIMS!! Incuding several online retailers. One way or another I expect my money!!

I also use the themal glue. Most tip tip replacement kits come with a piece of the hot glue gun glue. If people worry about security once well positioned with thermal glue I would take my mono wrapping thread and just wrap the tiptip metal base and down onto the blank making smooth transition and flexcote that like you do during rod building. That's secure and invisible makes nice transition. Many good rods are built that way where guide wraps and tip wrap are same color thread.

Sorry, but the title of this thread brought me back to my dating days and what I may have said to some women

Anyone have a tip top replacement kit they recommend for keeping in the gear room? I think I have at least 4 other tips I could fix lol. I have two matching echoes with a spare tip section for both and all 4 are broken in the same spot 1.5” from the top. I gave up caring about it but maybe if I throw an eyelet on it it will stop breaking?

I ordered a couple sets of different sizes and the glue from this place: https://www.flyrodcrafters.com/
With shipping it was under $13 altogether and I have a good little selection of spares in a drawer now. The trick will be remembering which drawer when I need it.

I thought Luhr Jensen had I kit in the past, would see em at Fred Meyers and such, but didnt see it online.

I repaired 2 echo tips in the same fashion. I must have thrown away the other 2 spare broken tips as I can’t find them. 2-3 seconds with a lighter and the tip shot right off and they fit perfectly back onto the now slightly shorter blank. I did add a touch of glue on the echo rods, there wasn’t much excess after heating. Seems legit.
