John Day

I recently fished the John Day River. After the trip, I wrote a blog because I truly think it's one of the best places in the Pacific Northwest to introduce kids to fly fishing.

I spent most of the trip throwing size 6 crawfish patterns, but honestly, just about anything would have worked! I dont know how many fish I caught but it was a ton. Most of them were small and after about an hour I downsized to a 10ft 4wt which was a blast.

I know people screw up at Clarno rapids on occasion, is it all that tricky?

its not bad if you have some experience. the only time clarno gave me any trouble was at 850 cfs. rented a cat for that trip, and t-boned front and back.... . had to run down a kayaker who flipped in clarno yrs ago. i was cracking first beer below clarno, and the guy floated by - had to haul ass to catch him. he was one wet, cold, tired dude by the time we got him to shore

i started out doing clarno to cottonwood, but 3 guys in driftboat with a large cooler, plus of beer, got me to start lower to avoid clarno. been going since 2001.

I started running it that way too, in 3 days no less. Now I go solo in my 13'6" raft and take a week. Move day. Lay day. Move day. Lay day. Much more civilized.
I'd like to run it in the fall, but even starting at 30m it would probably take 10 days!
